Show m LELIA MERKLEY funeral held Thursday Lelia Merkley Final Rites FIeld I flu Final rites will be beheld held for Mrs Lelia Lyman 63 in the Vernal First Ward Chapel today Thursday at 11 cm am Mrs Merkley diEd Sunday at a Salt Lake nurs- nurs nursing nursing ing home after a lingering illness LELIA MERKLEY was born September 14 1897 to Amasa l Iason and Elizabeth Jane Lyman in Escalante Garfield County Utah It was there she lived with her family until she was vas nin nine I years ears old ONE DAY her father kill kill- killed ed a mother coyote and brought home a coyote pup They kept him for quite awhile and he became a rg- rg regular ular pet when they found out much to their i ment that he was killing the chickens Of course e her father had to make quick work of mister coyote She started school at the all eQ of six irs in a small one one- roomed school house Her teacher Miss Mannie WeekS taught to read from letters printed on little square cards and to write on slates with chalk WHEN THE Indian Reservation I was thrown open for home in 1905 Le Le- Le Lelie's lies lie's fati- fati came to Uintah County to look it over and the next summer the family 10 loaded everything they could on two wagons and for their newly newly- found home It took one mono men menth th to make the trip The first winter and summer on the reservation was spent living in a tent The next fall they were able to move into a large room one house which her father had built FOR THE first five years the only water they had was hauled in fifty gallon barrels from the Indian Canal which was about 4 miles away Many times in the summer the water would get so hot that it would blow the corks out of the barrels Mrs Merkley was a member ber of one of the first families to homestead in what is now known as Tridell and it was here where she met Christo- Christo Christopher Christopher pher Bartlett Merkley They were married Oct 11 1916 For many years Mr Merkley was one of the leading honey producers in the valley Mr anti and Mrs spent many hours of service in the various wards and corn com communities where they lied had liv- liv lived lived ed Mrs Merkley was a Sun Sun- Sunday Sunday day school teacher organist and chorister of the Relief Society 2nd counselor in Primary and president hf bf in Tridell Ward Af Af- Af After ter moving to Vernal she was Sunday School teacher in both 1st and 2nd Ward Relief Society Later when the wards were divided she stayed in as president of o the new 3rd Ward On JulY 25 1948 she was chosen as 2nd counselor in the Stake Relief Society She has als also taught several Primary classes and was a avice avice vice captain and chorister in Annie K Bartlett DUP Camp for years Mr Merkley died Aug 25 1951 She is survived by b seven sons and three daughters Ly- Ly Lyman Lyman man Nelson Even Evert Karl NylE Dean and Thoral Bar Bar- Barta Barta ta LeMore and Reva Thirty Thirty- two grandchildren one great great- grandchild three brothers Oscar M San Francisco Cal Paul Dee Salt Lake City M Reed Provo Mrs Byron Fiel Fieldsted sted Salt Lake City Mrs Rex Taylor Vernal and Mrs Orin Swain Neola |
