Show Ashley Elementary School Design Draws Plaudits from froDl Trade Mag The new Ashley Element Elementary ary School building at Vernal VernalIs Vernalis Is featured in a recent issue of Intermountain Contractor tor a building trade maga magazine zine with a cover picture ar tide and other pictures Inside the magazine The article states Ashley Elementary School building at Vernal Utah Is it the newest example of good lighting control Judging from statements by officials of Uintah School District and many others who have seer seen the school since its opening at the beginning of the school year this attainment Is anus unus ual among schools THE ARCHITECTS and school people have jointly done much studying of the lighting problems of schools It was after much planning and many c conferences that thai the system now working in Ashley School wa visualized and put Into blueprints The result Is a new school with a built in system of day lighting for classrooms that thai provides natural light without glare and supplemental dial cial lighting that Is comfort comfort- comfortably ably Visitors from surrounding areas have come cometo cometo to the school to see how the arrangement works Is pushed with These plastic skylights arranged four each to a classroom are Installed in the roof and bring In natural light In such volume that on normal sunny days additional lighting may not be necessary There are approximately skylights In the building Plastic In the domes is double thickness for better diffusion ot of light For supplemental light each room is equipped with new fixtures ThEse slender fix tubes tures suspended from Crom the ceiling house output high lighting tubes Too strong for direct lighting they flow the light to the ceiling In this thit way th elight Is powerful but Indirect diffused and corn com free As if this were not enough to satisfy the planners of this new school outdoor windows are recessed and the building itself oriented so as to make impossible any disturbing dl di rays of the sun THE RECESSED windows also provide planting areas The brickwork prevents the sun sun from reaching the the Inner windows In this protected en students also face north They have more than adequate illumination Ing the skylights and the re windows which bring in natural light and the dial lighting fixtures all with with- without without out glare Another step in the control of lighting for this school is the reducing glare glass used In all outside windows This type of glass filters the light takes out heat and reduces the harsh elements and it can be procured from a number of glass manufacturers A secondary dary feature Is that a perfect perfect- perfectly ly clear view of the outside can be had from the inside but a person outside cannot see what Is going on inside THE SCHOOL HAS 21 rooms of which 17 are arc class class- classrooms rooms for grades 1 through 6 Two rooms are for kindergarten ten classes In addition there Is n a remedial reader room and anda anda a lIbrary Besides these are the restrooms foyers receiving ing room a teachers work workroom workroom room and storage room The school accommodates more more than students most of whom are brought to the school and taken home by school bus Principal A Al- Al Alwyn wyn Call is safety conscious and all bus loading and un un- un unloading loading takes place outside his office where he can over over- oversee see and control bus loading procedures A spotlessly clean kitchen halt ha capacity to prepare lunch lunch- lunches es for all students who spend the day at school Serving Is done in the purpose multi tables and room roon Ising folding seating When lunch Is over this room room can be folding sound resistant door and two classes can be held at one time HEATING HEA TINa THE building isa Is Isa a combination oil and gas furnace which uses oil all as standby equipment Classrooms are equipped with topped formica desks chairs and work areas Desks are not fastened to the floors but can be moved for various sit s i t u a t Ion i o n s Kindergarten rooms are further equipped with radiant heat so that floors are warm and children can play and romp without danger to their health KINDERGARTEN pIa play y areas are Immediately outside the kindergarten classrooms and large windows allow the teacher to watch watch and super super- supervise vise the play from Inside The school is located on a acre 20 tract of land |
