R Touchstone She played the piano for the residents while they and the staff sang Friday the Relief Society visited vi and gave a lesson That afternoon the Central School f fifth and sixth grades came and decorated the center for Halloween MONDAY J Y ONE of the residents Forest m moved ved to Price to another facility New resident in the tile Sunrise Center is Marlyn Williams age 29 i r rP P oooo r r 00 0 p o aa o. o roa oo e n a ao 3 bb a o MO p h ba Ot ua o gA PP O 9 o n w e fC Y e a. a a RA RAY V MOWERY celebrates birthday October 21 Ray Hay Mowery will wi celebrate his birthday at atthe atthe atthe the center Mr Mowery was born in Salt Lake City and moved to Vernal when he was one year old He spent most of his life in the Vernal area He has been a resident of the center for approximately approximately approximately ap ap- ap- ap proximately five years ACCORDING TO Mr Mowery there have been many changes an in the Vernal area fn the past 85 years At one time where the Sunrise Center is located was pasture land stated Mr Mowery There were no paved roads and in the springtime we had to walk the fences to get out of the mud he chuckled There were no high schools in Vernal when I 1 was growing up the highest grade education was the eighth at the Uintah Academy he stated I quit school in the fifth grade Many children had to quit to go goto goto goto to work In those days if you could read and write you were considered educated I have worked since the fifth grade at one job or another Most of the time was spent shearing sheep That along with farming and coal coat mining and herding sheep was about all the employment there was in the basin I WORKED in the coal mines for seven winters We used carbide lights and would be paid per car load of coal shoveled out of the mine Those were the days when a person worked very hard for little pay he explained Some of the coal up in Coal Mine Basin was easy to dig but most it had three layers of dirt in it that had to be extracted before it went into the coal car It was really hard work The miners were usually very tired when they came out of the mine he added We would usually work there in the winter and then get a job a farm or something as soon loon as the ground thawed Hunting and fishing were two of Mr Mowery's interests He tie related that he and companions would get a wagon and horses and load up their bedding and grub and go back up into the and fish You could catch as many fish as you you wanted any place that you d in your hook There was a time when we fished up around Trout Creek and the fish would even bite a hook that wasn't baited there were that many he added lie He has always enjoyed watching sports and still sti enjoys many of the games on television Other of his hobbles hobbies are reading an listening to the radio Mil l tt l was born October 21 18 1890 0 to Uriah Mowery l and Jenevia Mowery He lie and his wife Etta Ella had two Iwo sons Clayton and Gail Mrs 1 Mowery died In 1954 1 and Gail died In September tl this s year of cancer ancer Mr Mowery has five grandchildren and three great grandchildren great |
