Show Eastern Utah Juvenile C Court Shows Inc Increase Information recently released by the Administrative Office of the Utah State Juvenile Court shows a substantial increase increase in in- crease in juvenile delinquency cases processed processed processed pro pro- through Juvenile Court in the Fifth District which comprises the counties counties coun coun- ties of Carbon Emery Grand San Juan Duchesne Uintah and Daggett DELINQUENCY cases went from in 1969 to 1023 in 1970 This is a percent increase in this type of case This alarming increase in this area compares compares com corn pares with only a 8 81 J percent increase in delinquency cases state wide for far the same period Individual counties varied considerably with San Juan County being the only one that recorded a decrease percent for this period INCREASES IN delinquency cases referred to the courts in other counties of the tho district ranged from the percent per perr cent increase in Grand County up to a percent increase in Duchesne County with the other counties showing increases es as follows Carbon percent Emery percent Daggett 33 percent percent percent per per- cent and Uintah 23 percent Cases of all types including delinquency delinquency delin quency jumped from 1386 in 1969 to 1679 in 1970 for a percent increase For Forthe Forthe Forthe the first six months of 1971 the swing up-swing in delinquency cases has been even more pronounced such cases have been referred during this period of time in 1971 compared to for the same period a year ago agar This marks an increase increase increase in in- crease of some percent for this six months period Notwithstanding the substantial Increase Increase In In- crease h in delinquency cases in eastern Utah this area of the state continued to record the lowest rate of recidivism In 1970 only 31 percent of the youth referred in this area had any previous juvenile court record This compares with 45 per percent ent state wide and 51 percent for forthe forthe forthe the Salt Lake County area In 1970 51 percent of all delinquency cases in this district involved non non non-crim crim inal behavior and acts illegal for child ren only such as curfew possession of tobacco truancy and out of control TIDE THE RECENT REGENT upsurge in delinquency cases in eastern Utah can partially be explained by changes in population From 1960 to 1969 there had been a fairly constant decrease in child population Inthis in inthis this area of the state stater In 1969 however this situation changed and there was some increase for the years cars 1969 and 1970 Notwithstanding the decline in jn child population during most of this decade there had been a slight increase in delinquency de de- cases indicating an increase in delinquency rate for juvenile court age youth fouth This increase in is delinquency rate has been typical of the state and the nation For example for Utah in 1960 there were referrals to juvenile court for each 1000 child chill population In 1970 this rate had increased to per 1000 |
