Show 1 It Four Miles of Concrete Lining Work Begins at Water Hollow Tunnel Water Hollow Tunnel east of Strawberry Strawberry Strawberry Straw Straw- berry Reservoir a feature of the Bonneville Bonneville Bonneville Bonne- Bonne ville Unit of the Central Utah Project is being lined with a 16 inch 16 inch thick layer of concrete THE BOTTOM section of the lining called the invert was completed last week reported Project Manager Palmer B B. B DeLong of the Bureau of Reclamation Reclamation Reclamation Central Utah Project Office The 4 mile long 1 mile long tunnel was drilled to a 13 foot diameter by an 80 ton 80 ton mechanical mole Steel forms have been assembled preparatory preparatory preparatory pre pre- to pouring the arch section or orthe orthe orthe the remaining portion of the tunnel The huge forms are 10 feet 4 inches in diameter diameter dia dia- meter and 32 feet long The forms are moved Into place by a Jumbo Rig mounted on train rails ralls and pulled by an electrically driven locomotive Hydraulically operated rams on en the jumbo rig are used to place the forms in correct position Eight forms are placed adjacent adjacent adja adja- cent to each other permitting individual concrete pours of feet in length POURING OF the concrete arch will begin within the next few days Three eight hour eight hour shifts will be used five days each earh week About 35 men will be employed employed em- em in the tunnel on each shift The day shift will pour the feet of concrete concrete con con- crete the swing shift will clean clean up up and prepare forms and the graveyard shift will reset the forms preparatory for the next pour Air vibrators attached to the forms will smooth the concrete eliminating the need of except for filling an occasional void The forms will remain in place for about 16 hours Small holes are to be drilled in the concrete after the forms are removed for pressure grouting to fill any voids that may be left between the concrete and the rock walls Weep holes are arc also alsoto alsoto alsoto to be drilled to permit seepage water to enter the tunnel and relieve the hydraulic pressure A LARGE batch plant has been erected erected erected erect erect- ed at the outlet portal where concrete is mixed and loaded into Moran agitator agitator agit agit- ator cars for the trip into the tunnel Each car holds eight cubic yards of concrete and two cars are arc pulled by each train A wet wet belt belt transfers the concrete concrete concrete con con- crete from the Moran cars to a Thompson Thomp Thomp- son unit which pumps it through a slick slick line line pipe for placement behind the forms Lining of the tunnel is being accomplished accomplished accomplished by Gibbons and Reed Construction Construction Construction tion Company under contract with the Bureau of Reclamation Harold Wilmer construction engineer with wilh the construction construction construction tion company stated that a total of about cubic yards of concrete will willbe willbe willbe be required to line Water Hollow Tun Tun- nel This is equivalent to enough concrete concrete concrete con con- crete to cover a football field to a depth i f w. w 1 1 i x ti i JUMBO RIG mounted on rails moves huge steel forms into place in Water Hollow Tunnel Concrete will be poured 16 inches thick around the foot 32 frame w. w r MORAN AGITATOR CARS carry concrete from the batch plant into the Water Hollow Tunnel for placement of 25 feet Completion of the tunnel is scheduled for June 1971 Water Hollow Tunnel will be the first section to be completed of the mile 37 long Strawberry Aqueduct The aqueduct will divert water from several streams on the south flank of the Uinta Mountains Mountains Mountains Moun Moun- to the Bonneville Basin The tunnel tunnel tun tun- nel is part of the Bonneville Unit of the Central Utah Project The project is being sponsored by the Central Utah Water Water Water Wa Wa- ter Conservancy District |
