| Show Vernal Raiders Take Fourth Place at Softball Tournament The Vernal Raiders a local women's Softball team attended the Western Slope Women's Invitational Tournament August 7 8 and 9 and took fourth out of 13 teams The Raiders defeated their first opponents 14 to 2 Saturday Saturday Saturday Satur Satur- day morning SATURDAY EVENING the Raiders lost to 8 to 7 in a back and forth match went on to take first place In the tournament After losing his close match the Raiders had to play Naturita last years year's first place winner and defeated till team 10 to 1 Sunday afternoon the Raiders met Denver's Denver's Denver's Den Den- vers ver's and were defeated 18 to 6 G. The Denver took second place in the tournament Players for the Raiders were Connie Cook Shirley Wanda Hobart Diane Mecham Rosemary Bigelow Lonnie Lonnie Lon Lon- nie vie Edrington Loa Kay Bowthorpe Deanne Dean Dean- ne on McCurdy Judy Smith Linda Hullinger Hul- Hul linger Gerrie Buckalew and Dodie Old Old- ham Elden Eiden Buckalew coaches the team THE RAIDERS set a tournament record record record re re- cord by executing a a triple play in the Naturita game Naturita had the bases loaded when a ball was hit to third baser Diane Mecham She threw the ball to home plate to Wanda Hobart who threw it back to third base to Gerrie Buckalew who then threw it to second base to Shirley The Raiders h had d several girls named to the all tournament all team including Wanda Hobart Deanne McCurdy 1 and Gerrie Buckalew Shirley was given honorable mention The Raiders were also given special recognition regarding regarding re re- garding their good sportsmanship |
