Show j a ny tah t f. f t e f ft 4 yr t a tI ii t i Notes i i. i n By y Dr Wayne Reid Iteld Superintendent DISCIPLINE AND I DRESS STANDARDS Every aspect of today's modern modem world depends on some degree of discipline yet discipline and dress standards within the educational framework have come under attack violently at times When pupil discipline problems develop it is usually a symptom of other problems that cannot be sol solved ved entirely by the school administration or teachers alone SOME OF the causes of pupil misbehavior originate in the home some in the community and some in the school Therefore the full cooperation of parents teachers pupils and community services and agencies is required The problem concerning discipline is that it has become confused with punishment or fear Discipline is actually understanding the need to obey reasonable rules and regulations to make life better The best discipline in the schools when students obey the rules because they want to because they understand understand understand un un- un- un the meaning of the rules because there is a sense of school pride when discipline cases are at a minimum in that school Research points out that good schools have fewer discipline problems th than n poor schools good teachers have fewer discipline problems than poor teachers overcrowded classrooms classrooms classrooms class class- rooms have more discipline problems pupils with emotional difficulties create more serious discipline problems than happy well well- ad adjusted pupils pupils who are in school create fewer discipline problems than those who are failing to have satisfactory school experiences experiences ex ex- peri nc S IN MOST cases intelligent citizens demand discipline within their schools Schools simply cannot exist for the purpose they are intended without discipline Teachers the lesson they desire without proper discipline Therefore school administration should must insist upon discipline But what is the best way to achieve correct di discipline That is s the pi problem blem Happy cheerful students at school still exhibit good discipline This is our educational objective Schools must be a good place where there is warmth of individual in In- teachers If It not discipline will be poor Students need to know and understand the reason for the rules Therefore these rules cannot become arbitrary but by the same token must be enforced constantly There must be a repercussion when they are broken just like any grown up rule IN ADDITION what about dress standards Most assuredly everyone has their own views In the Uintah School District we have a a definite belief that students behave as they dress Students who come cometo cometo cometo to school neat well pres pressed ed and sharp are likely to perform that way We at the administrative administrative administrative ad ad- level feel a public trust and responsibility to guard against those who would demoralize the educational atmosphere The integrity of our educational institutions must be maintained When business representativeS representatives representatives are seeking prospective employees they are influenced by the appearance of the student body In addition the patrons who pay for the schools have a right to demand quality in all areas The administrative conference conference conference con con- ference for all alii principals and board off office ice personnel will meet within the next couple of weeks to discuss these very important matters H If you or your PTA PIA officers would like to have input input input in in- put please contact your principal immediately Following this conference a suggested method of procedure will be reviewed and altered if necessary by the PI PTA A representatives and student council leaders The school district strongly solicits your our support in helping make our schools in this area the best in every respect |
