W V tJ al mG m ka G ono O aI Conservation Officer Have you ever been lost last or temporarily misplaced as many people call it If you have or if you hunt or travel in some of our back country where there is a chance you may become lost then a new television series is coming up that should interest you The Division is presenting a a. a five part survival series starting January 2 on Channel 7 at 7 pm p.m. Lee Robertson will be the instructor and he does an excellent excellent excellent ex ex- ex- ex job Many basin residents are are familiar with Lee as the hunter safety instructor on TV and as the man who teaches our local hunter safety instructors The five topics to be covered during the series are 1 Psychological problems of being lost 2 The survival kit 3 Fire building 4 4 Survival shelters and 5 Snaring and edible plants It isn't only the inexperienced hunter or backpacker who gets lost so this series should be of interest to a great many people Speaking of hunter safety brings to mind the excellent job that Utah hunters did this past fall Normally during the rifle deer hunt we have several fatalities but this year we did not have we any-we did lose one hunter during the archery season however but this is very unusual The Division recently finished a survey on all aU hunting accidents accidents accidents ac ac- ac- ac during the last five years and there are several points t bat at everyone should be I ji adua ah te bf were inv involved in 62 percent of accidents accidents' and were predominantly caused by horseplay Shotguns were connected with only 10 percent of accidents which surprised me The really interesting statistic was that all hunting accidents happen within a range of 0 to 10 yards-this yards indicated indicated indicated in in- again that h horseplay or being unfamiliar with the whereabouts of your fellow hunters causes many a accidents Utah used us d to be at the very bottom of the list when it came cameto cameto cameto to hunting accidents but now we are at the top arid arid- we feel a alot alot alot lot of credit must go to the hunter safety program a and d the awareness it fosters In the last 18 years students have graduated from th this s program and their age group has the best safety record In the Basin we have seven active Lloyd instructors Clark Arvon and Louise Harrison Eldon Wilkins Terry Halliday Art Ellison and Larry Ab- Ab and they all deserve a hand and recognition for the service they have performed for their communities |
