Rowen was assigned to the Forest from the W Washington Office at the forest orest Service where he directed the planning and management of most of the nations nation's wilderness and other special areas throughout the Forest Service He served for lor five years as supervisor of 01 the Humboldt National Forest in Nevada evada and prior to that filled key positions on the Boise and National Forests and andin andin andin in the Regional Foresters Forester's In Ogden Bob and his wife Dorothy are happy to be back in the West Westland land and d express appreciation for lor forthe the e friendly reception given them by the community I DURING THE summer and fall fall II of 1973 an interdisciplinary eam em m from the Ashley National orest forest made a systematic inventory of the ecological and made nan an made features that should control management decisions for lor an area known as the Vernal Planning Unit This unit located in the southeast portion of at the Forest includes the drainage of the Whiterocks River and the National Forest lands due e east st of 01 it Overall planning direction was wai provided by Recreation and Lands Branch Chief J. J Kent Taylor working with Vernal District Ranger Vaughn E. E Francis The core team was headed by Dr Andrew E E. E Godfrey geologist geologist- and consisted of Alan G. G Baird landscape ar architect Neil Nell A. A Deets watershed specialist Alan A. A Partridge range conservationist Roy E E. E Morgan forester E E. E Allen Alen Shippee wildlife biologist THE DRAFT versions of the theland theland theland land use plan and the environment statement are now completed and are awaiting review The public will be given opportunities to review and comment upon these documents before e they reach final form Interested individuals and representatives of f Forest user groups and other government agencies participated in a field Lu 7 I r t v r f A. C Stevenson Company of ont brought the East Park road near to completion 2 The 1 s sanitary landfill went into operation this summer 3 The Altonah sewage lagoon was completed 4 4 Moon Lake Electric Association installed several new Underground at Cedar Springs 5 5 The Firehole recreation complex is constructed and needs only an electric power supply Negotiations are underway underway Underway Un un- derway with Pacific Power and Light Company to build the necessary power lines 6 e. The road to the Red Canyon Visitor Center was seal coated this summer 7 A new comfort station has been constructed a at t the popular Moon Lake Camp Ground 8 8 Water and sewer lines we were constructed between the Dutch John townsite and the Dutch John airport This was a joint venture by the U. U S S. S Bureau of Reclamation and the Utah State Division of 01 Aeronautics 9 9 The Mosby Irrigation Company started construction on the Julius Park dam and reservoir 10 The Union Telephone Company installed microwave repeater facilities at Grizzly Ridge and Dutch John Mountain AN ACCELERATED Forest timber Umber sales program has been in operation all summer Every available forester and forestry technician has been pressed Int into service to locate the timber tim timber tim ber prepare environmental analyses cruise mark and lay layout layout layout out the sale areas prepare the sale sale appraisals and prospectuses advertise and sell the timber timber Approximately Approximately 13 million board feet of timber will be advertised by December 31 Timber cut during 1973 totals about 15 Twenty of 01 these fires occurred on the Flaming Gorge District The Ute Indian crews spent a busy summer on on the Wasatch Payette Bridger Bridget Teton and Nez Perce National Forests and on the Yakima Reservation in Washington Some of the Action was on and State of 01 Utah blazes The Utes earned over and saw a lot of country Foresters Dick Webster and arid Bill Sims served as liaison officers working with the crews EARLY TillS THIS year an extensive fire planning project was completed by Forester Ron Sanden Dispatcher Wilford Evans Fire Management Branch Chief Marv Newell and fire management personnel from the Regional Foresters Forester's Office In Ogden The objective of fire planning is to achieve a balance of manpower manpower equipment methods and facilities at the least
