Show r fir r y I SUZANNE FICK exchange student of Capetown Africa Foreign Exchange Student Attends Uintah High School Suzanne Fick 19 of Capetown South Africa IS is an exchange student sponsored by the Vernal Rotary Club Miss Fick Is a graduate student but is attending the senior class at Uintah She will be here for one year and is residing with the Dr and Mrs Paul and Mr and Mrs Stewart Ashton HER PARENTS Mr and Mrs Martin Mar Mar- tin Fick financed her trip to Vernal She is one of five children three sisters sisters sisters sis sis- sis sis- 17 14 and 12 one brother 4 years old Her father is a lawyer in Capetown Capetown Capetown Cape Cape- town and her mother Joy is a purchasing purchasing pur pur- chasing agent for Mohair Carpets Suzanne stated she was happy when she was informed that she would be becoming becoming becoming coming to a cooler climate than Africa where the coolest the weather gets is about 60 degrees but she wasn't prepared prepared prepared pre pre- pared for the of Vernal IN VERNAL is the first time she has been in snow The snow in Africa is up on the top of the mountain and is only about two to three inches deep The climate is mediterranean and there is a lot of wind She stated she likes the school system here and the teachers nave llave tremendous tremendous tremendous dous patients with the students In Capetown the schools have more dis dis- and very regimented She attended attended attended at at- tended an all girl school and was required required required re re- re- re to wear uniforms to school IN THE summer the girls wear blue dresses blazers blazers' and white summer hats and in the winter they wear black skirts blue shirts charcoal blazers and a tie They They must must tye their hair back from the thee face if its longer than the coller The girls can not wear makeup or jewelry to The uniforms too and are are required to have short hair She is enthused about the wide choice of subjects available in the Uintah School District and the relaxed atmosphere atmosphere atmosphere atmos atmos- phere in the school rooms rooms She stated the students here are allowed to think for themselves and she feels they learn quicker than in the r schools SUZANNE IS impressed by all of the safety devices in the America homes and the big cars Also with the television medium which she had never had never seen She said the television really makes the news more interesting and it becomes part of you and the the- advertising about the health of the people is very good especially about the of smoking She finds the food here more more sive and anda a difference i in the shopping hopping hours In her city the shops open pe at at 9 am a.m. and close at pm p.m. during the week and on Saturday they close at noon She likes to play tennis all year hockey swimming net ball and likes to ski although she was just introduced introduced introduced intro intro- to the sport recently SHE RELATED that the trip from Capetown was fun and every plane was delayed on the entire trip In Rome the hotel personnel made a mistake in the passports and put her in a room with one of the male students Due to the language barrier they could not convince the management that they did not room together which she stated seemed entirely entirely entirely en en- proper to the Italians so after the personnel left the room she quietly changed her luggage and roomed with one of the girls Suzanne speaks two languages English En En- gUsh glish and Afrikaans which is like German and Dutch and similar to Flemish In the African schools the two languages are required of all students SHE STATED all of the street signs and shop signs are printed in both languages languages langu ages and the newspapers are printed in English morning and evening and there is a daily Afrikaans newspaper Suzanne like the American people and andI states they are very active She also I likes the way we enunciate our words |
