Show n T I 1 I y STUDENTS of Ashley Elementary fifth grade and Francis Cherry of the center examine bitter brush seedlings t f t Ashley Fifth Grade Plants Last year an environmental program was Initiated by the Vernal District Bureau of Land Management Office in cooperation with Val and the entire Ashley Elementary fifth grade class The program was such a success that it was carried on Into this past school year JANUARY 17 Robert Jensen Francis Cherry and I Donald onald Smith personnel per sonne sonnet met with the Ashley fifth graders and their respective teachers Val Lowell Long Tim Kinsey Kin Kin- sey scy and Kathleen The main purpose of the project was to provide a basis for an environmental awareness for the students Bob nob Jensen and Don Smith talked to the students concerning how it should be planted and raised that is is a delicacy food for deer and about Blue Mountain where the students would eventually plant lant the seed lings Each student planted his own seeds and through the winter and early spring the tho seedlings made good growth Th The big day to plant lant these seedlings on Blue Mountain came May 22 Three school t buses carried carded the students and their teachers teacher including Judy Stoll substitute to the top of Blue flue Mountain at a desIgnated designated des des- designated site Robert Jensen Mark Strong Francis rands Cherry and Don Smith personnel were on hand to give a short talk on the resources within the area and provided Instructions on how to plant the seedlings BEFORE LUNCH the students were divided Into small groups for the pur purpose ose of gathering such things as evidence of the remains of a vegetarian and carnivorous car carnivorous animal deciduous plants li lichens II chens fungi Igneous and rock and many more The students have havea a keen awareness for the environment and Impressed most of the tile Instructors with their knowledge After AHer lunch the seedlings were Vere planted and then the students students stu dents boarded their buses to look at a unique area of Indian near near- by These are arc the only ones known to be written on a horizontal rock face fuce rather than the usual vertical Lace face Last years year's planting program received nationwide attention through the US U.S. publication Our Public Lands Several persons from as far cast east as Virginia and New York have requested Information lion tion concerning the article The program has also been requested by the Weekly Reader for national publication The success of the overall program was summed summed sum sum- med up by Francis Cherry We hope this will become an going on-going program |
