Show t r icH j PUBLIC FORUM I LETTERS TO THE EDITOR What Is 15 your opinion The Express welcomes letters from its readers cong concerning con can any subject pertinent to the Uintah Basin While there are no restrictions restrictions re reo re- re as to contents or reasonable fI lL High Prices Dear Editor The rea reason on for or the tha following is I just came home from the grocery store with 5 pounds pound 3 o of dog food which last week to the day I paid 20 cents less for I guess that is the final straw for us We have been here since March l and andI I have gotten to the point where Im I'm gritting my teeth by the time I leave leavea a grocery store We had company from Wisconsin Minnesota l and Colorado throughout the summer One of the musts of scenic views was a tour of a grocery store and they couldn't believe it it That was 2 24 21 Mi months ago and food prices are still going up and away As for furniture and appliances last spring while poking around a furniture store I spotted a vacuum cleaner identical identical iden iden- to one I had bought six months earlier in Lamar Colorado population miles from Denver so much for shipping costs The furniture store here was charging exactly more for theirs that I paid curious I went down town and that store was only charging 2000 more for same vacuum That made quite an impression if I were going to buy anything relatively expensive I would head east or west The poor Vernal merchants the people length we request good judgment arid and andreason reason by the writer Letters must be signed However names will be withheld withheld with with- held from publication if U requested by bythe bythe bythe the writer write i J I really feel sorry for the Vernal people the I people who have lived here for years ears and with the Influx of us oil people find the prices of their groceries groceries groceries gro gro- ceries and other basic needs soaring It must be comparable to being rooted to the ground in front of an approaching truck We have never lived in a more expensive town town we have never eaten casseroles before now we do 3 and 4 times a week they arent aren't bad I wish the oil companies who send their people into a town could g get t their heads together and open up a large market groceries clothes furniture the whole bit and open it to the Ule public That way the people in the town could benefit from an oil boom and not just justa a few elite who seem to feel its it's justifiable justifiable justifiable justi justi- to not only take the oil people but also their neighbors That may not be possible so I suggest the merchants drop their prices so it is not profitable to drive into Salt Lake or Denver to shop and do it now There really is no vicious cycle that is the faulty reasoning reasoning reasoning rea rea- of the merchants who have thoroughly thoroughly tho tho- roughly convinced me that a trip once a month to stock up on staples out of Vernal is profitable for this family Very Sincerely MRS 1 CHARLES BARTHOLOMEW |
