Show By Jack Jock Wallis Members of the Uintah School Board Doard of Education just about lost their scalps Friday morning at a meeting with the Ute Tribe in Ft Duchesne concerning the school districts district's dress code restriction restriction restriction tion on long hair Evidently the Utes were on the war warpath warpath warpath path being very unhappy with the dress code policy This is not different than the many non-Indians non who have held several several several sev sev- eral meetings with members of the board in an effort to change change- the dress code Nearly Indians were present including in- in including including in in- members of the Business Council Council Council Coun Coun- cil and the Superintendent It seems that some of the Indians were very hostile and demanded a change right now in inthe inthe inthe the present dress code The Board Doard members members members mem mem- bers would not be committed to make a change and this increased the temperature tempera tempera- ture of the meeting Finaly some of the Indians brought out a urge drum and started playing a war dance or as one board member stated musical entertainment The board members tried to leave the meeting but were blocked from getting out One board member who has very short hair stated he was looked upon as very strange because of the way he choose to cut his hair I am sure that if anything will make the School Board Doard modify the present dress code that the scrape with the Indians Indians Indians In In- should bring home the To fo each his own If long hair is traditional with the Indian people why should they be made to change At any rate the school board members members members mem mem- bers were impressed to the point of actual fear of violence in their meeting with the Ute Tribe A lot of work went into the Uintah High Schools School's homecoming parade Fri Fri- day The floats were outstanding and demonstrated a lot of school spirit Two school marching bands were on hand to show contrary to some beliefs we westill westill westill still have a band program in the junior high and high school One thing that took our eye this year was the Cadet marching unit of the Navy reserve corps organized for the first time at the high school Now if we could just win the traditional football game homecoming would be really great 44 44 U. fr rr Monday is a holiday for many fortunate for government workers school students and teachers All state Federal Federal Fede ral and county offices will be closed for Veterans Day The district schools will swill close Monday for the deer hunt or for some who dont don't hunt and would rather call it the fall harvest vacation Most of the retail stores and this news paper papel office will remain open Monday and celebrate the day clay with whatever you want to call it envying those who have havethe havethe havethe the da day off But around here on Saturday the opening open open- ing day of the general deer hunt it is also pretty much like a holiday About everyone will go to the hills to look for their deer And as the thc sun breaks over ovel the tho horizon horion Saturday morning the mountains will sound bound like an enemy inva invasion ln as the hunt hunters ni pop away at the surprised deer |
