Show Speech Hearing Language School Twenty one children are are re enrolled in a Summer Speech Hearing Language School held five mornings each week from 1130 at Ashley School The funds for this five week school are provided provided pro pro- vided by the Utah State Division of Health Bureau of Special Health Services MRS R R. R II Ih St St. Aubyn Speech Pathologist Pathologist Pathologist Path Path- is in charge of the program and andis andis andis is assisted by two certified teachers Mrs Marland Stagg and Mrs Mike Dondero Deanna Galley and Joyce Angus An gus also assist in the program as aids and Jocelyn Jensen is a substitute aid ald The entire program is geared toward getting each child to verbalize and use correct speech Several of the children are arc verbal non and others have unintelligible unintelligible un un- un intelligible speech Some have slight hearing defects and two have profound hearing healing losses This is a challenge for forthe forthe forthe the workers to try to get these children children child child- ren to learn to use speech that can be beEAC beEACH EACH CHILD receives daily individual individual dual or group therapy for his or her particular speech hearing or language problem In addition each member attends four different sessions daily dally planned toward eliciting speech and reinforcing reinforcing re reo re- re correct speech One session is Story Time Flannel board stories appropriate for speech correction are told the group The children are encouraged to listen for their sounds and to act out or take part in the story ANOTHER SESSION is songs and musical activities Many children will sing the words that they are arc unable or refuse to say out loud Singing seems to relax the children and put them at ease case Arts and crafts is a fun time for all Each day some simple art project is completed and verbalization about the project is encouraged to reinforce good speech GAME TIME U Ls another favorite session session ses ses- sion sian Here again games games which promote are planned The children are arc encouraged to use lIse their new words or sounds so they they become become a natural habit with them Snack time is mid morning and the children learn social graces by actIng act act- Ing as host or hostess Please Ilease and thank you responses es are encouraged I when they are served their refreshments refresh ments SEVERAL FIELD trips are being planned to give the children new experiences exper lences to talk about Speech is a learned learn ed skill and like any other skill requires time to perfect Often it is a slow and tedious task for both child and therapist thera them past but when a child suddenly realizes he is producing a sound correctly and stops way midway in a sentence and says hey teacher I said that word right then you know that that mountain summit summit sum sum- mit has been blen reached and you start plans to scale another |
