gaining a respect for them Is this not one of DC the most import ant skills that all people must develop if we are to live peace fully ONE VERY important aspect of living together is respect for authority and the laws that guide our actions The dev development of a school govern went ment and the use and operation of the democratic processes provide much more insight into our democratic system than i can be attained from a text book The safety patrol provides the opportunity for authority to be to fellow students Students learn how It feels to accept responsibility and auth and to recognize the importance of the position that has been established AS SAFETY ETY patrol mem hers bers the students learn to help others and recognize dangerous situations before they arise Re for Cor the authority of a safety patrol member even evenI I when it Is a fellow student I helps all students to develop a I clearer understanding of time the need for law enforcement offic and their role in assisting citizens Education involves the cation of the skills that students have learned in the classroom One method used to obtain practice is the use of students In the offices of the school and overall develop ment of the students Involved As students grow older and gain knowledge and experience they recognize that the time is rapidly coming when they will ha have ve to begin to apply the skills that they have learned over the years A great many decisions must be reached as they contemplate their future RELATIONSHIPS with other students stud begin to become more personal and the need for close friends to help make their many decisions increases The relationship between a boy and girl becomes so very import ant at this stage of the process for It will not be belong belong long until many of the students will be married and raising families of their own The question of whether they have learned from their ex and can now guide the experiences of oC their own child ren is ever present FORMAL courses help to ans many of oC the questions that are facing students at this time but they must learn so much more This learning pro pro- process cess takes place in the form of football games time the Friday dances assemblies building the winning float the formal Cormal dance etc These are only a few of the many experiences involved In gaining an education It has be come impossible to keep up with the knowledge explosion of today The roles of the teachers and the methods that they use to teach are arc rapidly changing Teachers must now become dir dir- directors of which most people are familiar Lead Lead- Leadership must be provided y the professional educators and res res- respect for the training and know know- knowledge knowledge ledge of the educator must be given by the public INVOLVEMENT BY the public must increase if these new programs are arc to succeed Any necessary changes will oc cur only after careful study and preparation The members of our communities must be closely involved in time the change process and take time necessary to clearly understand why the change is proposed how It will help the instruction al process what results are anticipated how the program will be evaluated Education is not just a teach or er II a student and an a book but buta a vast complex of interacting experiences Education must be a prime concern of our
