Show Trachoma is Reduced in West Schools By Gerald L Mitchell Principal Todd Elementary School Trachoma a con contagious tag i 0 u s form of a disease of the eye wherein the inn i n n e r side of the eyelid is infected form form- forming ing granulations that scratch the eye ball causing perman perman- permanent ent damage and eventual blind ness in old age FOR THE past four years an extensive testing program has been carried on with the schools of Whiterocks West Jr and Todd for this disease In the year 1964 cases of the disease was found in these three schools Recommended treatment treatment was initiated both by parents and anel the Public Health Service and by the 1966 1006 survey only 45 students were found to have this infection Again treatment was initiated and when the survey was taken last fall 1967 only ten child child- children ren were now infected This is a remarkable record of what modern medicine can cando cando do and the small part we ns as schools play in this drama of true life makes me feel that Im I'm proud to be part of our school system and Nation and andI I wish to extend my ula to those concerned who gave of their time and efforts to achieve this ideal |
