Show Reservoir Ice Out Fishing Success Rises By John Hewston Fishery Unit Ice fishing has long since dis dis- dis disappeared appeared at Flaming Gorge Re Re- Re Reservoir and all angling is now done in open water Fishing sue suc- success cess has picked up considerably since the ice melted too THE WATER has been slight ly muddy in the upper reaches of the reservoir from Crom the Brin egar Ranch Road Squaw Hol Hol- Hol Hollow low upstream This is due to the turbid water brought in by bythe bythe the Green River niver Blacks Fork and smaller tributaries Those few angling parties trying this area have been catching some nice rainbows however Bait and spinner and worm combinations have been producing there From the gravel pile road on downstream the water is much clearer except in bays where some tributaries enter These areas on the west side have been attracting most of the an an- an anglers recently as has the Sheep Creek Bay area And fishing success has been very good on page 8 Ice Out Ont Continued from page 1 ABOVE THE Lucerne Valley area most of the angling Is done from the bank During nice weekends a fair number of boats have been used for fish fish- fishing ing and pleasure boating at Luc Luc Luc- Lucerne erne and Cedar Springs recreation recreation tion areas Some boaters have ventured into Sheep Creek Bay but most angling there is from the bank At the present time the water level of the reservoir Is still receding The only boat ramp still in the water is the one at Cedar Springs Recreation Area near the dam The National Park Service has tried fixing up the lower ends of boat ramps and old highways for boat launching However the receding water levels leave a water soaked base under these ramps Boat Boat- Boaters ers say that the situation still leaves a great deal to be de- de desired desired sired BAIT AND have been producing good catches of trout from Lucerne Valley to the dam Although many of the rainbows caught in the lower canyons have been smaller than those upstream sinking large streamer flies files among the bould bould- boulders ers will produce catches of lar lar- lar larger ger er fish there too Roads in the area have dried out quite well this spring and andall andall all are usually passable Camp Campgrounds Campgrounds grounds at Lucerne Valley in Sheep Creek Canyon at Cedar Springs and Antelope Flat have been used on weekends Those above feet are still under undera a covering of snow Most of the lodges motels and restaurants around the re- re reservoir reservoir are open now and aU all expect to be in operation by May 1 The marina at Cedar Springs also will have boats and motors for rent and other ser ser ser- services vices to provide by that date |
