| Show M jesse A haws ends postal career afta 35 years in vernal office its a carry feeling ad milled jesse tessa austin haw raw friday as he began his annual leave that win end in his retirement april 30 after offer 33 35 years of government service pervice he ile also has served as local civil service secretary tor for the past 33 years mr haws raws began working at vernal post office sept 18 1922 1022 as a postal clerk at that time he reminisces the post office was in aln tah state bank building we had two rural carriers who used horses and buggies and there were no city carriers 1 herncall the carriers were david L richards and 4 richard jensen three clerks were employed ur mr haws floyd hume and hattie Y johnson E J young jr was the postmaster a total of six employees in those days gross receipts were about mr haws disclosed big growth the post office moved into its present building in 1925 now the office employs five clerks two city carriers two rural carriers and two substitutes a postmaster and assistant postmaster a total of 13 business is in the region of annually mr haws served under lour four postmasters mr young wilson murray pontha calder and frank G born april IS 15 1897 in vernal mr haws attended the old uintah stake academy during the summer he attended brigham young university on sept 5 1018 he lie enlisted in the army during world war I 1 and served at camp kearney in california with the field artillery he worked with the nix six inch guns after his release in february 1910 1919 he taught school for three years in naples and davis prior to joining the post office staff two tasks at first mr haws acted as a substitute post office clerk and also taught at central school mr haws was married to the former lena eaton may 29 1121 1021 and they have live boys austin varl dale john and max austin is on the staff at the university of minnesota in st paul varl is working in tacoma washington for the red arcs service dale is working for his ph D degree at cornell university in new york john is attending the BYU and max Is at the all have served overseas in the service all but austin who was in the merchant marines served in the army four have been on missions for the church and three have graduated from college austin obtained his ph D from iowa state college dale obtained his masters degree from iowa and Is working for his ph D at cornell credits wife mr haws placed a good deal ot of the credit for the achievements of his sons upon his wife who guided them while I 1 was engaged ir civic and church work the retired postal official recalls that his first church office kajs that of sec secretary rotary in the YI MIA in naples he served in itne stake offices for 13 yep yes ye s including holding office of superintendent mr haws was in the second ward bi bishopric sho pric then on the high cot council Anci 1 and later was stake superintendent again he ile served atonal of 11 years on the high council and was stake clerk for three years ward and stale stake work also he was bishop of first ward for three years and worked in the stake presidency for nine years until the recent division of the stake currently he is on the stake committee for senior priesthood members in the boy scout field he has served as a stake commissioner and a member of the district council mr haws civic activities include charter membership in the american legion and membership in hi the local lions club where he has been acal active e for the past seven years both Ms and mrs haws expressed their great appreciation lor for the many friends tat they hav in this community through church and civic work mr haws had only the highest praise for his association associations with bo both OE h the staff and the general P public ile during his service at the post office mr and mrs haws immediate plans include a tour of the temples in manti st george and los angeles |
