approximately 22 crews are expected to work on the pipeline one or more it is hoped hope will headquarter at vernal at any rate there will be jobs available in this area on the project the vernal city council Is still considering applications lor for a franchise to serve the community with natural gas when they give the go ahead construction on this system will be ablo to move ahead resulting in still more jobs the outlook for employment is extremely Im important for the uintah basin at this time when unemployment is at a point considerably sider ably higher than during the past two years according to spencer C helner heiner manager of the vernal amplo employment ament security office the large amount of 1 is chiefly a seasonal pa factor actor due to a colder winter and more snow he said but it could mean less employment during the entire year of 1955 than last year if the outlook for coming employment were not so bright while the pacific northwest pipeline case was still in court a year ear ago the labor market in vernal vernal and thi the e uintah vintah basin received a shot in the arm with h the plans for building the new high schools at vernal Verna Fand and altamont the armory in vernal and power plant at rangely langely Ran gely oil held field also helped some last year although it was no not as g great reat as is planned for this th i s year the average number of we wells P being drilled last year at on one time tim e was about six with the n number ber dropping to as low as tw two nt at one t tune ne there are now eight or nine wells going in spite of the snow and cold where ten dr illers and their crews were listed by mr heiners office as out of employment a month ago there are now only five or six listed of course this probably will not drop too much more now before spring however leasing activity has increased greatly all along the proposed pacific northwest line and there will be many wells drilled in the next five live years in the uintah basin and elsewhere january unemployment tor for the uintah basin was estimated at about persons by mr heiners office compared with last year and 1 in 1953 53 for this month the figure is expected to increase to about persons out of work figure estimated by number of persons tiled filed at the employment office office plus twenty percent last february there were an estimated out of work and in 1953 last week there were 27 new claims filed for unemployment compensation compensation for the uintah B basin compared with 32 last year ear for the same week the initial initial claims filed during january to compared com oared with last january added to the initial claims in january but including uintah county only were continued claims per sons who had filed at an earlier date filing for payment compared with last year during january initial claims jumped alarmingly the first week in january when 81 91 persons filed but bul b after the first week filing leveled oft off and the total for january closed not much higher than a year ago although the actual number of persons out of work this year is estimated much higher the local office of employment nt security which at present is handling initial cealma only tor for duchesne county will begin handling both initial and continued claims in that county during the first part of march according to mr helner gelner at present the
