Show Pre preparations parado ns under way to protect t ashley creek according to statements made to the express by county commissioner fi artlett and county engineer nile hughel a serious situation confronts the poo 1 pie of vaudy if not handled promptly and d effectively will mean that the water from froin ashley creek will more than likely cause the destruction of much pro pei deity ty the heaviest snow fall fell known in years will wm flood the country he v warm iam weather veather comes unless organized efforts are made to prevent it li if will ho bo remembered three years ago we had LIA a most unusual flood when ashley creek went on a rampage and much property damage resulted in consequence this is particularly true with regard to the bed of the creek which is filled with rocks silt and debris until in some places the centre of tile tho chan channel fiel is on a level with the banks bariks the channel of ashley creek is very meandering and when the flood comes as it did three years ago and as it will this year with greater force because of the greater abundance of moisture it will leave the present channel unless four or five places in the creek bod bed are fixed before this happens there is no telling what the dam damage ewillie will be one of these places is at tho old 8 D colton farm and three other places between there and W H ays residence the flood waters will go out at all these points unless the channel of the bed is cleaned out and protected by dykes if this should happen the bridges will go out or be left high and dry entailing a great loss to the county this includes include s the colton bridge two on the willis johnson street and those known as the atwood and bridges the Sidd ovay bridge on the street running north and south of the center of town has been raised four feet since it was built and yet it is only one and one half feet above the creek bed due to the fillin up of the channel by the flood of three years ago engineer hughel said it is absolutely essential to strengthen weak places in the banks of the stream with dykes and deflecting ting piers and then to cut a narrow channel through the cobble rock bars in the bed of the stream so as to straighten the channel in places and to start anew a new channel of sufficient width anc permit the water to widen it and then cutting its own channel at some of these places the bed of the stream is as high as the bank hence the necessity of cutting out a new channel this work is too big a job for the property holders affected and is not the work of the county cammi commissioners sion however the latter must protect the bridges and for this purpose as well as to help the farm owners protect ezeir property they have decided to fix a day right away and call on every able bodied man and boy to turn out and help in this work this will be known as creek day of A list of supplies and the tools necess necessary axy to equip this body of workers is being furnished the commissioners by engineer hughel at least able bodied men and 60 to 70 strong teams team will be required for one whole day to do the principal work this will not finish the job of course but it will put the stream in such shape that as the water comes up it can be taken care of by the property owners directly together with such help as the county may employ these men meli and teams will be divided into sixteen gangs and put to work at different points on the creek further detaiL Twill be published in our next issue |
