Show UINTAH COUNTY HAS 11 AS VAST MINERAL RESERVE by ray nay E colton early day mining her here e in III uin tah county and also it hi Wt county furnishes a most interest ing inc record which together r with the present search for petroleum and natural gas shows the tile vust vast potential reserves of mineral which have been left by a ben valent old mother na nature tura dur inc ing past periods of the geologic record one of the older mines was the pope iron mine located near the summit of the uintah moun tain range about twenty miles northwest of vernal near pear the old dyer copper mine mino TI the 6 assay of the ore pre jre ire taken from the popo Pop eMine ads M very tary low 1 tw in 1 n sul sui s ul dhur and phosphorous conte content rit tit and was said to be of a rood good quality for the manufacture of iron the abundant float lying y ing below the outcrop of the iron ore in this aren arra of uintah vintah county suggests a rather ruther large and as yet unexplored iron orr voin vein in the pope mine area A study of the iron originally taken from the pope mine and also a recent study of the area by the writer indicates that the iron constitutes a much higher proportion of the float than it does docs of the rock from which the float was derived for lor the ore is much heavier than the limestone and tends to concentrate as a placer deposit the ore replaces limestone of the era even in the high grade ore the structure tue tuc from the viewpoint of geologic aspects of the replaced strata beds can be detected and there ap appears P ears to be every gradation from high grade ore thoroughly or partly replaced to little alter atter alter nta ed limestone 10 replacement of strata ata in the a area of uintah county where the pope ppe mine is located about 25 miles mites north west wept of vernal evidently occur edin ed in certain beds but whether or not the deposits are closely associated with fissures has not as yet been determined cisto nione alone with searchers oil for galla sassa amt 0 AK ui and gas bearing rocks will take in the pope and mine areas during field work this suimei summer woodside Wood side ilde deposits the woodside mine was first explored and opened in 1013 in a branch of the ashley canyon about twenty miles northwest of j vernal as the crow flies hies the location loca n is geographically placed locally as 2 miles west of the old redjine red pine setting an original report on this area of uintah county by grant carpenter early day minerals gist acate idame indicates lc ame ate that S exposures of rich hematite beds are low I 1 in phosphorous and sulphur float A collected near the mine fossils identified by b arg dra D gerty early day paleontologist as follows group 1 Steno pora 2 Sub tilita mar marine ne or se sea a other fossils were gathered near the lime klins of this area of uintah county and one mile west of the lime kilns kalns the iron deposits appear to have replaced lindstone in the area there Is considerable local evidence of fissuring and faulting of the rocks which are associated with the deposits of ore and the re placement probably pra bably took place placer adjacent antto to a fissure copper deposits of county the dyer mine located northwest of vernal Is at present the only former copper producer in ahw uintah range though some copper has haz be been found north of browns park in 1874 small seams of lead ore was discovered in the south western part of the uintah mountain range on beaver creek 1 33 3 3 miles southeast of kamas utah and iron with w ith some lead 1 ea d ore 0 re was found round f oun d in october 1902 on the extreme west side of the uinta moun bains the geology of the area is defined on the barisof basis of the local country rock which Is herein described as asa a rather heavy bedded limestone in which the copper deposits occur about feet above a massive quartzite which Is Js apparently quartzite paleozoic era and no fossils be ing irig found indicates that the strata may be other than sip in geologic age th the e ore recovered was part car bonate b ona onn t e an and d part c h alco aico cite with some malachite the carbonates appear to be th tha principal ore minerals sulphides sulp hides being pre pro sen sent bent t on only 1 y I 1 in n the small cores that have not been entirely oxidized but are commonly filled with small ve inlets of the the carbonates some of the ore shipped from dyer diggings assayed high as 50 per cent copper and con bained some silver and gold lead minerals contal containing ning some silver have been reported as I 1 found on an the slope lying north of the dyer dyen mine |
