Show LIVESTOCK LOSS THRU CARELESS HANDLING ENORMOUS atho some livestock are moving to markets in utah every day of the year the big fall rush will get underway in the next few weeks clair R acord uintah county agent noted wednesday marketing losses due to death crippling and bruising as well as other miscellaneous causes amounted to last year these losses represent either direct or indirect costs to the livestock producer he stated losses in marketing are somewhat like the game now you have it dont A con liast k now you jug juu gog log k t buo kol vuo sid erable amount of money has been spent in raising the live stock and just when the producer is in a position to collect the profit of his years work he loses that thru some unfed unfortunate artun accident oi or just rough handling mr acord released a table showing that losses from bruises totaled condemned postmortem post mortem inspection grub damage to cattle hides dead on arrival the foregoing led the list of nine causes of heavy loss in a recent livestock marketing conference both railroad officials fici als truckers and packers indicated that much of this loss has its origin on the farm and people in channels of marketing can do nothing about many of these items A utah trucker emphasized the fact that livestock prodoc ers in the state frequently call on him to truck their livestock to market but when he arrives at the farm there are no loading facilities or the loading faaili ties are arc in bad condition it was his opinion f that producers could make dollars for themselves by taking a few minutes to build adequate lc loading kading facilities rough handling results in considerable loss each year as indicated by the above figures packers are arc forced to do rather extensive trimming of large numbers of carcasses because of rough handling which began on the farm and extended all thru market channels it is obvious that packers cannot pay for aged meat mr acord said altho aitho one individual producer may not feel the effects of such losses these losses are arc taken into account by packers when buying livestock and the price to the producer makes necessary allowance for such losses looking at these animal loss figures there seems to be ample incentive for producers truckers and people in the meat trade to handie handle livestock with care A word of ot caution by com commission men packers and others will net more dollars for each group |
