drilling particularly for gas ga is planned plan d by major by robert nobert E covington vernal petroleum consultant this is the second in a series ot of extremely important articles on the oil and gas potential of the uintah basin E extensive exploration fo oil and gas has been announced during the coming year the first well which was drilled fr gas or oil was the john P V vell veil drilled with r C la Is in this well a seated on the south flank the uintah dasin basin south of mccork ridge by poor peor spring this early wildcat well was no geologically well located for it was studded about feet above a well saturated tar sand in the wasatch formation the tar sand was waa exposed on tile the cliffs to tile south of the well this early pion pioneer eee operator evidently hoped to f ind find tile the tar sands hands haying having fluid oil down dip most of the locations which were drilled in tile hie early loboa 1900 were drilled due to the presence of seeps of 0 oil or asphalt incidentally ci the surface casing of tile the old pope well is still sticking out of the ground in 1921 there were 6 wells drilled in the uintah basin and 3 in 1927 4 in 1928 0 in in 1947 10 in 1950 all and gas production the density of wells drilled for testing tills this acreage Is approximately one 1 well for every square aniles and this includes the f told field wells at red wash walker hollow and at ashiley valley lima iffus there Is ono one test for every block of acreage 0 miles wide and 4 milea fleg long further etther Fur ut ther thet 03 of rhese these wells were not drilled sufficiently deep to adequately test tile the entire section which hicie offered possibilities for gat gas arid ard oil pt production ue the trot first common lal oil field in utah was waa discovered by aid falty oil company in september of 1918 1940 at ashley valley 8 milea east of vernal lion tsee see index map tills production was found nt at a depth of tee feel in the Pen sylvenia weber sand bond prior 0 to o this discovery gas had dad been produced in the curtla curtis limestone at 1970 feet in tile the ashley ashle valley f field fela and was wa piped ro to vernab vernal however the me shallop shallo gas tone was rapidly depleted ashley valley iles 8 0 miles east cast of vernal the commercial accumulation of oil la Is due to sit n uplifted or anticline as 2 tile the gIns geologist i would call it it which has baa a northwest t southeast Multi cast trend i the ille fold has 00 lift feet of bt closure AU all of tile the wells well but one were completed as flowing wells A very active water drive moves the oil up the flanks to the top of the fold there were originally 20 29 producing wells in the field which was drilled on 40 acre spacing the field is about I 1 i miles long and 1 mile wide As adof of january 1859 1959 athas it has produced barrels of 0 32 gravity intermediate base crude the ne field has a present allowable of 2800 barrels per day the field the rangely langely oil field lies heil in northwestern colorado near the colorado utah state line high gravity oil was discovered on the rangely langely antl anti dine cline in the year 1004 1904 theiu the 1 was high gravity green crude with a paraffin base and a t high gasoline content the oil 0 occurs in vertical fractures in the mancos shale of cretaceous age producing depths were from to 1000 feet As of 1953 tile the total prod tic tion of this green oil was barrois in the last aag few years new production has haf been found by wildcatters wildcat drilling on the south flank oj of the It angely structure the depths of this new production are from 1800 1000 tb feet the oil Is sold bold locally and brings 3 18 15 per barrel no water is 19 associated with this shallow allow sli production no casing calling except surface casing is set through the producing intervals ahe 1 he wells are either drilled with cable tools or are drilled with air the ie average cost for a 2090 foot well co oil the average yearly production is around 18 to 20 million barrels per year there are two pipelines which moa move re the oil to market one the service pipeline company movee move the crude up through northwestern colorado and into wyoming and subsequently into tile the salt lake refining area the ite bulk of the crude Is shipped to the salt lake area by the salt lake pipeline Com two 10
