Show farm gas tax refund more sales tax considerations in senate senat by state stale son an 13 II 11 str inghem farmers arn am assured red of a gas refund tile the ic c sales tax bill its in threatening the weber college bill the all important appropriations bill and happenings in washington 1 D C the foregoing as aa current issues should be of interest to real dents of uintah and daggett counties 1 refund of taxes on motor fuels used exclusively for farm arm purposes was assured farmers friday when the gas gaa tax refund bill passed the house by an overwhelming majority the governor la Is pledged to sign the bill if it is in proper orlier order 2 pressure is being brought on for a general in crease of M cent in sales tax in lieu of a modest raise in the property tax to meet tor for seeable deficits the V cent tax woul draise an estimated only part of which la Is heeded during the next bienn blenn this in the opinion of some would let the floodgates flood gates open and there would be a scramble for the funds too it would no doubt force a return to the use of tokens for it you purchased an item for one dollar you would owe ac 2 c sales tax 3 the weber college bill setting up a four year college in ogden passed the senate friday this sets seta a precedent and helps pave the way for the passage of ir II B D no 47 authorizing a jr college in the uintah daun basin 4 the appropriation bill has been agreed upon tentatively tat ively now the task this week la Is to find ways and means to raise sufficient money to meet the proposed appropriations these is a 0 log jam caused by habec indecision islan as to what amount should be allowed for both the emergency and continuing school building program this and the proposed appropriation for state parks parka are causing the delay clearing these hurdles will clear the air and progress rs will be rapid from there on through 5 1 I spent part of the past week in washington D C in meetings as a member of the national advisory council this council 13 is composed of one cattleman and one from each of the ten western states much time wa was s spent on the proposed wilderness dill bill S 1123 entitled A national wilderness preservation tern tem for the permanent good of the whole people and for other purposes tills this bill sets up another bureau with blanket authority over the forest service park service dureau bureau of land manage ment ent etc it ia i contemplated that groat great areas would bo be vet met aside as wil wilberne derne orea areas where to use tile the language langu ago of the wit bill a wilderness area is hereby recognized as an area where the earth and its community ity of life are ua un trammeled by man where man himself Is a visitor who does not remain this sort of thing would be extremely detrimental to the public land states the bill Is n now 0 w out of corn com kittee and Is authorized by senator humphrey and 18 other prominent senators we were told by the department of interior that letters and telegrams are coming in the ratio of 0 20 to I 1 in favor of the measure congressmen and senators warned us that the nature groups were plan ning to send ten to twenty million telegrams and letters to the congress at the propitious time we must bp bo ready to do battle this is the same game group that stopped authorization of echo park darn dam another measure that took up considerable time in our deliberations was the encroachment croach ment of the federal government in the field of state water rights we adopted the concurrent resolution passed by the utah legislature memorializing memorial izing the congress to intervene in the mat ter and were told that 32 states had adopted this same memorial and sent it to their legislators alabama added an appendix stating we want T V A too it was thought that all the rest rest of of the states would adopt the utah resolution or one similar because the matter is of such importance investigation was made as to the position of two bills 11 II R by saylor of N Y and S by senator allott of colorado these two bills would ch change a n g e D dinosaur in os au r N na a bioni M monument 0 n u m en t to a N national ati 0 park status thus increasing the problems when the time comes to build echo park dam while this legislation 19 not an immediate threat it Is in the mill and will have to be met with concerted effort when it appears on the calendar we must ever be elert here in tho the west |
