are opt apt to result from the recently completed eltah school district curriculum study many local citizens citizen worked with school district officials official to determine a philosophy il of education for uintah school district the final meeting was held monday may 5 and findings of the study group are now ready to be presented to the board the later stages ot of the study were divided into two areas 1 the students school program in lind and 2 professional guidance and counseling the committee assigned to the students school program has held three meetings as a committee of the whole in addition three subcommittees sub committees made up of the members of this committee held eight or more meetings from investigation vesti gation made and informs tion obtained the area one committee recommends the following items be adopted as recommendations to the board of education I 1 recommends tile the adap tion of a seven period class day ii al the secondary schools assuming that this can be ae ac complis hed without losing ac credi tation 2 recommends that read ing in the lower grades re ceide greater stress 3 recommends t that h a t achievement mental and aati tude tests be continued and intensified aso also urges that these tests be given within the same school year 4 recommends that all teachers regardless of subject taught make closer check on spelling punctuation grammar both orally or written 5 recommends keeping the teaching load especially in the first three grades to a minimum and that better order and organization be required in tile the class room 6 recommends that advanced math subjects such as algebra be offered and urged in the lunior high level 7 recommends that a title nite course of study program be established for each teacher to follow in presenting ills his subject 0 8 recommends that a mul tiple track curriculum be of ferd fend this curriculum to in elude at least the following areas college entrance general commercial rine fine and aepli ed arti a each curriculum to meet at least three different aduca dional needs I 1 the general or core subjects to nit meet state bradu aaion 2 subjects covering cover ng areas of 0 special caal interest 91 Mec made available insofar as time a ability and in forest permits b rach fach student receive proper guidance in hil selection of curriculum and be em encouraged to make the boht use of ills his talents c english math and the sciences should be stressed in all curriculums d A program bo be developed to encourage and assist the gifted student e college level classes be offered in the senior year for the advanced student 0 9 recommends that requirements quire ments in all subjects be set above those required in the state minimum requirements for high school 9 graduation that these high minimum standards of achievement be set and maintained and that the parents and community be informed of the above re quire ments 10 recommends that the student be encouraged to take the more difficult courses according to ills his ability and a greater respect be developed among students and parents for education 11 recommends that terminal education be offered in the vocational areas a subjects pertaining to these vocational areas be offered earlier in the curriculum allowing the student to obtain more information be 1 fore graduation 12 recommends that each student be encouraged to take at least the basic requirements for college entrance 13 recommends rigid control and supervision of school clubs their purpose membership requirements initiations and operation 14 lyceum programs be related to school curriculum insofar as possible 15 recommend that the high school continue the present practice of not using tax funds tor for athletic programs 16 rallies and assemblies assembles should be held to a minim minimum m and at a time that will provide the least interruption to school studies 17 more public recognition be given to successes seb in the fields of speech drama music debate bubl business ness etc 18 10 recommends that the annual spring vacation period be bc set to coincide with the dates of tile the state class D basketball tournament 19 Ile recommends commends from page 9 er of the school what it teaches its problems its successes by the community and the parents be encouraged in every way possible po isible i e newspaper radio releases to the home etc the report was signed by dr 11 II W marrs chairman of area I 1 study group student counseling we feel that it is imperative that the school board do everything in its power to make adequate professional guidance and counseling services available to the uintah school district beginning in the elementary school system reported area 11 II the following suggestions were made 1 we recommend that tile the school board make every et ef fort to have necessary changes in legislation made that would permit employment of additional guidance personnel 2 we further recommend that new personnel hired in tills this department be familiar with the problems characteristic of rural community life and capable of working directly with parents when necessary 3 we are arc favorably impress imbres sed with the counseling and gulda guidance twe now available in the high school arid and recommend that they be continued and arid and that similar services be extended into oth er cr schools school in the district 4 that consideration be given ta obtaining a full time social worker in conjunction witt with tile the county state and the ute indian tribe I 1 we are in fit accord witt tile the purpose and work of the present referrals committee and recommend that this corn be kept active and en ell barged in any way that may contribute ion tribute to its effective operation 0 6 the rhe endorses the testing program ind and recommends continued emphasis use ond arid application lie be made of the tests arid and test results 7 any community depre senta a rather broad cross section of vocational opportunities tuni unities ties and we recommend that local guidance program make much broader use of the community resources sources ic that are available here and now in helping to orient students to the he vocational opportunities that exi exit exist t 8 wv we feet feel that art an attend once ance program ought to be clear cut and understand understandable alAe on oil the part of paren parents tsi arid and students alike we believe that hat the current record of attendance ten clance in ili our schools I 1 indicates that the present policy is good 9 inasmuch as studios studies reveal that 12 to 15 of the students tall fall in tile he so called exceptional exec optional grout group we recommend that as u much emphasis ns as possible be placed on tile the help and management in regular attendance at school board meetings as a consultant or advisor it 11 inasmuch as there are innumerable problems in in te grating indian children into the diniah school district system we further becom mend that the school board make special efforts effort 4 at helping teachers who work with indian children to understand the nature of their particular problems 12 we wc believe that the school board should institute a definite program of public relations and that will permit the of the district to become aware of the extreme importance of guidance arid and counseling ser vices that
