Show THE MINE TAX BILL IS FINALLY PASSED I 1 BY compromise new mine tax law la Is now definitely shaped and has passed both wings of the legislature in ia the senate it finally carried over the opposing votes of only mrs hayward george 11 II dern of salt lake and quince kimball ot of carfield county senator from the tenth district dietrict it carries the provision that mines shall bo be assessed at three mills the net annual proceeds thereof plus 6 5 an acre tor for the claim and the cash value of the surface let ot of the mines the words not to exceed do not appear in the bill other provisions of the bill which have been largely lost eight of in the debate over the words not to ex toed are that coal mines aall be assessed at their actual cash value that the state board of equalization shall consist of four members not more than two from any one pollyl cal party at salaries of a year and lengthy and quite definite specifications of the powers of that board and ot of the duties it has to perform these powers are consid crabby enlarged over the present powers and pinales tf ft the aboard and particularly over the powers and duties tha actually been exercised by the board in the past in the senate the end of the long conflict with the lower branch ot 01 tho the legislature came quite suddenly it had not however been totally unexpected it was almost a certainty that one house or the other would have to give in entirely to break the deadlock between them llie senate first had bad the matter before it 1 when a communication came irom the house saturday morning rejecting the olive branch held out in the way of a compromise provision the day before the debate in the senate then became whether the senate should recede from its ita position at once pr or try again with a new set of senate conferees the latter method finally won out |
