Show BLACK HAWK VETERANS bill introduced in united states senate providing for pensions A bill was introduced in the united states senate a few weeks ago provid ing for pensions for veterans of the black hawk war many of whom reside in the ashley valley the following communication from senator sutherland to william gibson will be read with a great deal of interest by black hawk veterans and their friends your letter of february 16 15 enclosing a very interesting narrative of beir experiences duding the black hawk disturbances is 13 received I 1 regret to inform you the pension pension law does not provide for the relief of those engaged in utah indian wars after 1863 1853 for several years the representatives of utah in congress have tried to get a bill passed that would include veterans of the black hawk war the best we have been able to do so far is to have this b passed by the senate it is now being considered in the house of representatives and everything possible is 13 being done to secure for it favorable consideration j if it passes you will be entitled to a H pension if not you will have to wait until another session of congress and i try again there is no class of citizen to which utah owes mere than to the indian fighters of 1864 1865 1866 and 1867 every person engaged in those indian troubles should have a pension and the present delegation proposes to keep pounding away on this matter un til the rights of the indian veterans are recognized |
