howell received five votes and christensen two and all seven were cast for friek frick uintah county was represented on the credentials Creden tiala committee by W if 11 on the committee of permanent organization ly J K bullo bullock ck and on the committee to draft resolution and platform by charles de dolsy col go B squires was selected as chairman to fill the vacancy caused by resignation of james T hammond the party emblem chosen is the eagle on a bee hive A resolution was offer ed by daniel harrington as en an amend mont ment to the platform after the committee on resolutions and platform l rad lad ad handed in their report which created heated debate and was wan finally voted down by an overwhelming majority 0 J salisbury burg of salt lake city was elected state chairman of the republican party the resolutions i la s cs ca follows and be it further that the republican party of the state of utah hereby declares and affirms that it is B opposed to the union of church and state and that it is also unalterably opposed to any high of any denomination whatsoever asking for political preferment and the benefits of civil office or in unduly Inter ferring said high ecclesiastical or church position and for the future and in order to promote tranquillity perfect equality and the beat possible progress of the state the republican party will use its best endeavors to enforce and maintain this principle following is the republican state platform as adopted by the convention utah republican platform we the republicans of the state of utah in convention assembled declare and affirm as follows we unqualifiedly indorse the policy of president theodore roo roosevelt develt and the action of the last congress it in its sue cue cessa ua legislation the railroad rate law the meat inspection amendment the pure food law the denatured alcohol law and other beneficial acts this legislation deals with the problems arising from great combines of capital in a practical and common sense way it recognizes that wealth in and of itself is not an evil but that evils are very often connected with its administration it seeks not to destroy the wealth itself nor to destroy the great enterprises which wealth has caused but to eliminate so for far as human law can eliminate the evil and conserve the good for the ebene th bene fit of the people and it thereby demonstrates mon strates anew the constructive ability 1 of republican statesmanship under the protective tariff the american people have scaled the great heights of prosperity more mills and factories are in operation more goods gooda are being employed higher wages are being paid for labor more american products are being sold at home and abroad than ever before plenty and contentment fill the land from sea to aea all this has haa been brought about and all this exists under and because of republican policies the very foundation stone of which is protection we reaffirm our unwavering confidence in the wisdom of this great policy of our party the good effects of the dingley law are plain and undeniable what may result from any change can not with certainty be foreseen but we declare it to be our firm conviction that more harm than good will come from any attempt tat at present to revise the schedule h dl we reaffirm our allegiance to the principles of reciprocity as taught by president and the hon hen james G blaine and declare that reciprocal cipro cal trade in the articles the like of which our own people produce and with which the they can supply our markets Is simply free trade in disguise we indorse the work of the utah congressional delegation in harmony with the national administration in furthering the general prosperity of the country and we indorse the republican administration of the state of atah we demand that the right bo be given by statute to permanent element ea ement within forest reserves for publio public roads irrigation ditches and canals and reservoirs doirs for storing water the same as its is now granted upon public domain and insist upon ow congressional delegation urging the enactment of such statue we recognize the meri meritorious torinus services rendered by the utah indian war vt rana and pledge our representative in ln congress to urge the governments recognition of such auch services by suitable pensions we recognize tre tle hardships to certain tall bona bon fide entry men ranged caused by the wholesale withdrawal of lands on ont aln tain ing coal and urge the restoration reat oration ot of such lands landis to entry at the earan att pos sible date we favor the building build ipg of permanent good roads and approve of legislative action for systematic good roads construction st we W
