aeo a council uncil meeting of stake officers and bishops of wards wands was wait held among other matters considered was the question of gambling and drunken ness it was decided by unanimous vote to deal with church mem members bersi who are guilty of these ices for their membership in the church unless a reformation ion in their lives can be effected it was waa decided to take a strong stand against gambling these decisions on the part of the stake and ward authorities was publicly announced during the conference by president bennion Ben mop the attendance at allitha 01 the except the one education ile he then referred to the law of tithing and complimented tho the members of tile the church in this stake upon their in complying with this law he gave much timely advice and counsel relative to the dally duties of saints and advised them strongly to keep out of debt elder nelson merkley compared the latter day saints sainta with ancient israel and called attention to the judgements judge ments which have constantly followed the breaking of gods commandments and the blessings which have always att attended erid every people who have kept them elder ward E r pack said the members of this church do not owe the world an apology for being latter day saints sainte it is a fact of which we should be justly proud when the greatness as of the mission of this people is finally comprehended by all the people of at the world this church will be regarded with as much reverence as the ancient church of christ ile he related some inci incidents dente of his hia journey for law not because of f fear ear of punishment advised the saints to exercise their rights as citizens in abolishing gambling and drunkenness president R S collett delivered a lengthy discourse upon a number of timely subjects ile he dealt forcibly with the subject of gambling in vernal city and hoped that it had been permanently rooted out ife he characterized the gamblers as parasites who sand no morey in the community and who are a detriment to the community from a business as much as from a moral stand point ile ho called attention to the fact that according to the laws of utah gambling is a larceny ile he advised parents to listen when informed of i on the part of their children ile he then dwelt upon the value of the prin principles of the gosele and the blessings within the reach of all who obey its pure precepts elder don B colton spoke forcibly upon the invincible position of the church before the world ile he proved that the latter day saints sustain the leaders of the church and particularly president joseph F smith first because of the pure and divinely devi nely appointed principles for which he stands and secondly because of our knovs kno ledge of his righteous character the speaker defended by a line of deer clear and forcible arguments tho the right of the latter day sainta to sustain by vote in public and by the r obedience in every day life the officers
