Show Local Royalty compete for Miss Rodeo Utah The Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo Royalty are presently competing in the State Rodeo Queen competion in Salt Lake City. Kathy Chivers was crowned queen July 7, the first night of the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo. First attendant is Heather Caldwell and second attendant atten-dant is Garna Chew. All three are from Vernal. The competition leading up to the three women being chosen included two different speaking events, modeling model-ing suits and clothing, horsemanship, plus they were judged on public appearance ap-pearance and personality. This will be the first time the royalty royal-ty from the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo will compete in the state competition. The winner of the state competition will be crowned Miss Rodeo Utah. The state competition will be much the same as the local competition, except ex-cept more difficult and will be a considerably con-siderably stronger competition. The horsemanship portion of the contest is very important. The women will be required re-quired to work with their own horse, do patterns, and they will be judged on how well they do. They will also be asked questions about horses, their handling and care. Perhaps the most difficult portion of the competition is when the women are expected to trade horses and ride and work with a different dif-ferent horse. Although part of horsemanship is to know your horse and its capabilities cap-abilities and drawbacks, changing horses can tell the judges a lot about how much the women really know about horses in general. Garna is attending the University of Utah, where she is studying accounting accoun-ting and taking courses to prepare her for veterinarian school. Heather graduated from Ricks College Col-lege in Idaho this past spring, and now plans to attend Brigham Young University. She is studying German. Kathy is attending Weber State University and is studying premedicine. |
