Youtf h frctaestf Sitting in Carnegie Hall in New York, the lucky ticket holders are finding seats, the orchestra is tuning and warming up, waiting eagerly for the star of the evening. If you are a stranger in town and a "grass roots small town American," the whole atmosphere is rather stunning. But where did all these artists come from? Here in the Ashley Valley you find dedicated, hard-working teachers, parents, and who knows maybe some of the artists will one day perform in Carnegie Hall, at least its a beginning. The Uintah Youth Orchestra was founded in 1980 by Cindy Faust, a music teacher from Grand Junction, Colo. It is provided through the Uintah Community Communi-ty Schools with Rhoda DeVed as administrator. ad-ministrator. It is currently -under the directorship of Mrs. Ora Fay Oviatt. Parents and community volunteers provide pro-vide the nucleus for the orchestra. Currently Cur-rently there are about 95 students in the orchestra. The only funding received by the orchestra is a small tuition paid by the students and budgeted through the Uintah Community Schools, public contributions, con-tributions, and a fund-raising Silver Tea held each spring by the orchestra. The orchestra is comprised of three levels according to ability. Recently, Orchestra Or-chestra III, the most advanced level, attended at-tended the Northern Utah Logan High School Invitation Orchestra meet, which included 11 orchestras from southern Utah to Wyoming. The Uintah youths received acclaim for their performances and a superior rating for the entire orchestra. On Saturday, April 23, the orchestra will perform again at the 2nd Annual Uintah Youth Orchestra String Festival at the Vernal Junior High auditorium from 9 a.m. to 5 p..m. The Festival is more than just a day-long event of solos, ensembles, and full orchestra performances. perfor-mances. Several teachers and performers per-formers from the various Utah Valley symphonies will be there to evaluate the performances, and hold master classes for students and parents at 2 p.m. The awards program will be at 4 p.m. The Saturday festival is the culmination culmina-tion of all the work of parents, teachers, and students of the orchestra for the past year.
