BILL VARGA shows how to get a juniper started during the afternoon after-noon session of the gardening and landscaping workshop. With the sunlight, warm temperatures, and snow disappearing, it makes you think Spring is just around the bend. With that in mind, preparations for the new . growing season and year in the area of gardening and landscaping need to be made. Dr. Alvin Hamson from Utah State University and Bill Varga from the Utahd State University Farmington Experiment Experi-ment Station came to Vernal on Wednes- day, Feb. 23 to discuss gardening and landscaping. ' An afternoon session was held in which approximately 14 people learned about winter care and pruning of ornamentals. (An ornamental is a plant cultivated for its beauty rather than for its use.) The group visited two locations in Naples: the William Mayberry's and the Arnold Baker's residences. Working with the ornamentals available at each location, Bill Varga discussed winter care and showed them . how to prune them. Mr. Varga discussed care and pruning of pine trees, aspens, junipers, strawberries, strawber-ries, raspberries, and roses as part of the afternoon session. "A pine will naturally lose its needles from the inside out," said Mr. Varga. He said every three to seven years a pine will lose its needles. "A real healthy tree, the needles will be retained back into the tree." Mr. Varga also gave some helpful hints about watering. In the summertime if the pine is watered deeply, you only need to water it once every two to three weeks. He showed how to prune an aspen and said it wasn't necessary to put on a sealer at this time of the year. Mr. Varga showed how to prune junipers. He said when they are brought down and put into heavier soil, they have a tendency to develop root rot. They need very little water. In a fairly moist year i ' AAv Al " - ' . t . "Water is the big thing that turns things yellow, "Mr. Varga said. Mr. Varga also talked about plants developing iron chlorosis and told how to care for them and how to take care of the problem. Many people at the afternoon session were interested in strawberries and raspberries. This became a major subject sub-ject discussed. Mr. Varga suggested Hecker, Aptos, and Brighton as the best true everbearers to use. Other shrubs, pines, trees, and roses were also discussed. That evening at the County Courthouse, Cour-thouse, approximately 50 people gathered to learn more on landscaping and gardening. "I was happy to see that many people out," said Steve Cox, Utah State University Univer-sity extension agent. Mr. Varga talked about landscaping and showed slides of different landscapes and ideas. He talked about his own home and how he went about landscaping it. He also discussed varieties of trees and shrubs,, planting procedures and care and management of ornamentals. Dr. Hamson talked about vegetable varieties, planting procedures and fertilization fer-tilization of garden plots. "If we know what we are doing and have a routine of doing it every year and keep caught up, it really isn't such a burden," Mr. Cox said Mr. Varga stated. This landscaping and gardening workshop along with the fruit tree pruning prun-ing workshop were held through the Utah State University extension to help people peo-ple with their preparation for the new year.
