Cozart was safe at third base. iKi Scott Kavanaugh usually nets mighty home runs or super bouncers in the outfield, out-field, but Wednesday afternoon he became a member of the Blooper Hall of Fame when he gained a strange, weird and unusual base hit in a Vernal Men's Softball League game between the Freestone Bailers and the 7-11 team. The game was tied at 6-6 and Kavanaugh just barely got a bit of the softball. The ball leaped over the pitcher's pit-cher's outstretched glove and headed toward the second baseman, but at the last second it preformed a sharp right turn and darted into right field. Two runners scored to give the Bailers an 8-6 lead and they went on to win the game by the score of 18 to 11. The pitcher just missed by inches of nabbing the hit by Kavanaugh and Kavanaugh remarked, "I'll take anything, the way I have been hitting." Ted Taylor, a former Uintah High School baseball coach, had hitting and fielding problems early in the game with the Bailers and 7-11. Taylor misjudged mis-judged the power of the 7-11 batter and the slugger knocked the ball over the right fielder's head for a base hit. Taylor also had early hitting trouble as he popped up to the catcher, but he solved solv-ed his problems as he garnered two singles in a row. Mike Cozart of the Outsiders injured his leg sliding into third base after having hav-ing ripped a double earlier which gave his team a 5-4 lead over the U.S. Males. Cozart performed a mighty slide al third base and he had to be helped off the field. One of his teammates remarked, remark-ed, "With all the pain he still stayed on the base." The U.S. Males' catcher, Mitch Koyce, must have quick hands as left hander, Bill Pope hit the softball wiih the end of his bat and the ball darted backwards to catcher, Koyce, who nabbed nab-bed the pop foul for an out. All the Outsiders needed lor a 5-4 w in over U.S. Males were three outs in the top of the seventh inning, but those outs didn't come very easy. The first batter flied out. Kob DeCol nabbed a base hit, fumbled it, recovered it and made a mid air throw to first base. The runner was sale as the softball arrived a few-seconds few-seconds late. The next batter ripped a shot to Kent Mortensen, but the ball bounced in front of the infielder and both runners were safe. The second out was gained on a fly ball. The softball was hit to Moiiensen, who garnered the ball and tagged a U.S. Male, who was trying to advance lo second se-cond base for the final out. The lag gave the Outsiders a 5-4 triumph. Dave King of the Bailers and Terry Hadlock of 7-11 were involved in an unusual rundown. Hadlock appeared to be heading to third base, but the ball arrived ar-rived at third so he decided to return to l jK jt second base. King, the third basemen, darted after Hadlock and tagged out the 7-11 runner at second base. Hadlock attempted at-tempted a headfirst slide into second base, but he was out. ' Two doubleplays were acquired in the game between the Outsiders and U.S. Males. There were U.S. Males runners on first and second and the ball was hit to Outsiders third baseman, Alan Beck, who stepped on third base for the first out and fired the ball to shortstop Hob DeCol at second base for the second out in the doubleplay in the top of the second se-cond inning. The U.S. Males countered the double out by the Outsiders with a double play al second and first base in the bottom of the second inning. Sports photgraphers involved themselves in some dangerous en: counters while covering the world ol sports such as getting hit by a missile known as a baseball or a softball, which isn't soft when it hits the picture taker; getting run over by horses in a rodeo, getting decked by football or basketball players, who are chasing after the ball as well as many other items. Those things are all part of the job, and this reporter found out that the photographer isn't the only one laking chances as a yellow Camaro. owned by this sport writer, was attacked by a foul ball and now the car has a dent as a souvenir.
