The cause The West Junior High Schools nor-iwest nor-iwest wing was raised more than four aches last week in a costly effort to ave that portion of the building. Several months ago building officials letected that the wing was sinking into be water saturated soil under the tructure. To correct the problem, last week abactor Dirk Harris dug 14 trenches cder the foundation of the building and fcerted 20 to 30-foot beams under the wilding's foundation. The beams were sed as levers to raise the building back of the building sinking is a severed waterlme shown left of the building in the trench. Sinking Junior High raised back to grade to grade About 32.000 pounds of pressure was applied to the ends of the beams to raise the wing level with the rest of the building. Harris said. Once the wing was level, the beams w ere permanently encased in concrete. Last Friday crews began pumping concrete under the floors of the rooms which had sunk to bring them up to grade with the foundation. According to Harris, the cause of the building sinking was a water line leak at the northwest corner of the building. The waterline served a bus garage located about 100 yards west of the schools. "Electrolysis ate through the metal joints of the pipe, which has been spurting a steady stream of water for some time," Harris told the L'intah School Board, last Thursday night. Harris also told the board that the drain pipe along side of the building was plugged which also contributed to the saturation of the ground and the building sinking. Harris said that the cost of raising the building would be around $65,000 by the time the project is complete. According to Ted Taylor, buildings and maintenance supervisor, the wing would be back in use in a week. Ml SC l.DS&IU STl.KS SKNIOHS HIS N HKHS MIXKI) DOL'HLKH T.'m.St,tlnKH W....I. Tr.mSUndlnK.
