Show Hinckley trial closing jury ready to adjourn The prosecution and defense have rested their cases, and closing arguments are being heard in the trial of John Hinckley, Jr., for the attempted assination of President Reagan. The seven woman, five man jury, which was expected to begin deliberation Friday, will have to decide whether he was insane when he shot Reagan and three others, as his lawyers argued, or whether he knew what he was doing, as the prosecution argued. Hinckley faces 13 criminal counts stemming from the March 30, 1980 incident outside a Washington, D.C., hotel. Three psychiatrists and a psychologist for the defense have testified that Hinckley was suffering suffer-ing from schizophrenia, or being out of touch with reality, and was driven by inner fantasies to shoot the president. Two psychiatrists for the government said Hinckley suffered only mild forms of mental . disease and knew what he was doing. |
