Show Neat work means bad job by fraud suspects Con artists distributing fraudulent social security cards were caught because applications for the documents were too neat to pass for government work, federal investigators told a Senate committee. Investigators from the Department of Health and Human Services and the Immigration and Naturalization Service described an operation by a Los Angeles couple, working with a Social Security Administration employee, in which coded cod-ed applications were sent to a federal computer center, bypassing local Social Security offices, to produce cards to be sold to illegal aliens. Investigators said the operation produced between bet-ween 10,000 and 40,000 cards at $20 each. s :, The husband and wife couple are fugitives. The Social Security employee and three others connected con-nected to the scheme were convicted and received receiv-ed sentences ranging from months to two and a half years. |
