Show Republican contenders to be here Friday Two Republican contenders for the Third Congressional District will be in Vernal Friday knocking on doors and visiting the Main Street business district to gain votes for the September 14 primaries. Ray Beckham, Republican congressional congres-sional candidate, will be taking a Main Street walking tour of Vernal from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon. Also Friday, Howard Nielson, Republican congressional candidate, will conduct a "blitz" in Vernal -meaning a door-to-door campaign. "I love to campaign this way," Nielson said announcing the blitz. "By getting close to people I have always felt better about my campaigning. And I want people to get close to me, too." On Friday Nielson and his team will "blitz" through Neola and Lapoint before arriving in Vernal to campaign for the rest of the day. Beckham's visit to Vernal Friday is part of a planned 12-day tour of 61 communities com-munities of the new third district. During Dur-ing his tour he will be encouraging voter participation in the Sept. 14 primary. "As a citizen candidate, I feel it is important im-portant to get out in the district to encourage en-courage people to vote in the upcoming primary," Beckham said. He explained that it is significant that voters of the area have the opportunity to send a third congressional representative to Washington in November. Beckham's tour begins Aug. 20 in Manila and ends on the steps of the Slate Capitol Sept. 2. "From the beginning of our campaign, cam-paign, we have emphasized grass roots, person-to-person contact with the people," Beckham said. "We believe it is this type of campaign that separates us from our GOP government." Beckham has been active in the fields of business, energy development, mortgage mor-tgage banking, farming and education educa-tion -this is his first attempt in politics. Over the past 30 years he has held position posi-tion as chairman of Provo City's Economic Development Committee, board member of Deseret Federal Savings Sav-ings and Loan Association, membership member-ship chairman of the Provo Chamber of Commerce, director of Brigham Young University's development program, director of the fund raising efforts for BYU's football stadium and Marriott Center and a regional representative and mission president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is currently professor of public relations at BYU. Nielson's campaigns have won for him the top spot coming out of the Utah State Republican Convention and four terms of office in the Utah Legislature. In his last term, he served as Speaker of the House of Representatives. |
