Myton 2nd downed Vernal Myton 2nd edged Vernal 6th, U to 8, in the first championship game and forced the Vernal crew into a second title game in Roosevelt. Myton's first two batters, Darold Gillman and Bardett Fausett flied out, but Reed Gingell netted a triple. Drollinger slugged the fence for a double and scored on a single by Gary Swim. Three runs were snared by Myton 2nd in the top of the fifth inning for an 8 to 4 advantage. Gingell garnered a double on errors and Rick Nielsen knocked in Gingell on a single down the left field line. Tabbee and Ross singled to load up the bases and Nielsen scored on a sjcnfice fly by cousin Doug Nielsen. Richens singled to drive in Tabbee with an 8-4 Myton lead. The first two Vernal batters, Drollinger and Galley, flied out in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Swim broke the hitting drought with a single. However, Swim remained on first base as the Myton shortstop robbed a base hit from Tassainer due to an outstanding catch. Vernal 6th's softball world appeared to be getting darker and darker as Myton added two more runs for a 10-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Gillman reached first base when the softball darted between the infielder's legs. Gillman was forced out at second base, but Fausett motored to first on a fielder's choice. The highlight of the inning for Myton 2nd and the lowlight of the inning for Vernal 6th was a two run homer by Gingell that cleared the fence. The Vernal team was behind by six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but they never gave up and they overcame the Myton lead for an 11-10 advantage. Gentry was safe at first base on a close encounter. Hamson was walked and Adam Massey singled in Gentry to cut the Myton lead to five runs at 10-5. Jeff Good was safe at first on the close play and Ned Seitz and Lynn Bigelow were walked to place no vacant signs at first, second and third. A sacrifice fly by Jeff Drollinger sent home Good with a 1-0 lead and Gary Galley was walked intentionally to fill up the bases. Gary Swim was walked and Seitz scored Vemal's second run. Brad Tassainer's sacifice fly scored Bigelow and gave tne vernal 6th team a 3-0 lead. David Gentry' flied out to end the inning. The Myton 2nd crew had two runners in the top of the second inning, but they failed to score. John Tabbee got on the base paths due to an error when his base hit was dropped and Russell Nielsen reached first base on a fielder's choice. Tabbee was out at second base on a force out. Mike Ross flied out for the second out, but the Myton coach thought Tabbee's was the second out and told Nielsen to run whi-n Ross hit the ball. The ball was fired to first base for a doubleplay, but the ball got by the first baseman. However, Nielsen never returned to first base and was called out for being out of the baseline. Vernal 6th was blanked in the bottom of the second inning and Myton 2nd tied up the game at 3-3 and took a lead of 5-3 in the top of the third inning. Doug Nielsen gained a double on errors and Dave Richens singled. Nielsen was forced out at third base, but a single by Gillman scored Richens. Another runner was forced out at third base, but Fausett singled and Gingell tripled to knock in Gillman and Fausett with the game tying runs at 3-3. Rick Nielsen garnered a double when his base hit attacked the fence and Gingell scored to give Myton 2nd a 4-3 advantage. Russell Nielsen was safe at first on a close play and his brother, Rick Nielsen scored to deliver a two run advantage of 5-3 to Myton 2nd. Mike Ross flied out to end the inning. run. Bieglow put the Vernal team back in the ball game with a two run homer, which cut the Myton lead to one run at 10-9. Bigelow ripped the ball over the fence in left center field. Drollinger blasted the Myton pitcher for a double and Galley gained a double when his base hit was dropped by the right fielder. Drollinger moved to third base on the error. Swim was walked to load up the bases. Tassainer reached first base on an error and Drollinger scored to tie up the game at 10-10. Gentry netted a fielder's choice and Galley crossed home plate to give Vernal an 11-10 lead. Russell Nielsen flied out for out number one, but Ross singled to keep the Myton hopes alive. Doug Nielsen flied out for out number two and Ross dashed to second base. An appeal play was made by Vernal 6th at first base and the Vernal coaches decided that Ross left before the softball hit by Nielsen was caught. The ball was tossed to the first baseman, who stepped on the bag and runner, Ross was called out and the final score was: Vernal 6th, 11 and Myton 2nd, 10. Maeser 3rd downed Roosevelt 4th and Vernal 6th knocked off Myton 2nd in the first round of the Roosevelt-Vernal Multi-Region Junior Softball Tournament last week. Roosevelt 7th downed Vernal 5th and La point toppled Glines 3rd. Vernal 6th defeated Maeser 3rd in the second round and Roosevelt 7th downed Lapoint. Vernal 6th advanced into the championship game due to a win over Roosevelt 7th. Myton downed Lapoint and Glines 3rd toppled Vernal 5th and lost to Maeser 3rd. Myton toppled Maeser 3rd. and downed Roosevelt 5th.
