Show Comment period for Utah BLM wilderness begins The availability for public view of the site specific analysis for the Daniels Canyon Ca-nyon Wilderness Study Area and 55 other areas throughout the state was announced last week. The preliminary BLM recommendation for the Daniels Canyon area near Dinosaur National Monument is non-suitable for wilderness. The analysis can be reviewed at the Vernal District Office of BLM from 7 : 45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, or at the Uintah County Courthouse in Vernal. Ver-nal. Daniels Canyon, consisting of 2,496 acres, is one of 56 BLM Wilderness Study Areas in Utah for which an analysis was released. Nineteen of the areas were recommended as suitable or partially suitable as wilderness. In Utah, BLM has studied 1.7 million acres of which 677,000 acres are being recommended for inclusion into the National Na-tional Wilderness Preservation System. Each of the 56 analyses addresses the environmental, social and economic effects ef-fects of recommending or not recommending recom-mending any, all, or a portion of the areas for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. The analyses are available for public review at all BLM offices and county courthouses in the State. Roland Robison, BLM Utah State Director, said the public is being asked to comment on the completeness of the analyses, provide any information that BLM may have overlooked and indicate their preferred alternatives. Worksheets designed to help the public participate in this phase of the wilderness program are available where the analyses are located. Comments Com-ments should be sent to the Vernal District Office by .Sept. 30. Information gained from the public will be used in finalizing the analyses, which will be the basis for a state-wide environmental impact statement scheduled for completion in late 1984. Robison added that not all Wilderness Study Areas in Utah are being evaluated at this time. Site specific analyses on areas located in Carbon, Emery and San Juan counties are scheduled to be available lor public comment in March 1983. Also, there are nine Wilderness Study Areas contiguous con-tiguous with study areas in adjoining states which will be analyzed by BLM offices in those states. Open houses will be conducted throughout Utah for review and discussion discus-sion of the analyses and recommendations. recommenda-tions. The last of the scheduled open houses is the one to be held in Vernal on Sept. 15 from 2 p.m. through 6 p.m. at the BLM Vernal District Office. |
