Show THE! NOW FIGHTING CANCER Many unsung heroes in industry and government are cooperating in the battle against one of our major diseases. There's still a long way to go but much progress prog-ress is being made. THEN: During the past 150 years, infectious diseases dis-eases and a variety of pre-and pre-and post-natal problems have been progressively eliminated as major causes of death. Cancer was not suspected to be a major problem then because it is a disease which does not usually usu-ally appear until later in life. Although cancer is a very old disease, little was known about it. NOW: A considerable amount is known about cancer can-cer incidence, and one thing that scientists know but may surprise many other people is that the age-adjusted age-adjusted cancer mortality rate with the main exception ex-ception of lung cancer-is not going up, but down. There is no epidemic of cancer. Americans can markedly reduce their risk of getting cancer by smoking smok-ing less, eating less, eating a balanced, low-fat, high-fiber diet, and by drinking only moderate amounts of alcohol, alco-hol, recommend the researchers re-searchers at the National Cancer Institute. |
