UTES ENTRENCHED AS REGION FAVORITES AFTER SPILLING UNION 60-36FRIDAY The Uintah Utes firmly established themselves as strong favorites to win the Uintah Division basketball crown for 1956 as they decisively defeated Union High School by a 60-36 score in the Utes' gym Friday. Except for the first few minutes of the game, Union was not much of a threat to the Utes. The score was tied at two, four and five but then the Utes ran up to an 11-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. Soon after the beginning of the second quarter, the Utes ran up a ten point lead which they maintained throughout the second, and third quarters. Halftime score was 26-15 and the third quarter score was 42-32. Union lost Clayton Huber in the third quarter via the personal foul route which seemed to slow down the game considerably. After 40 seconds of the fourth quarter, Valoy Eaton left the game with five personal fouls after making 15 points for high scoring honors in the game. Eaton was followed closely by Wayne Pope and Jerry Cutshaw of Uintah with 13 points each. Next in line was Union's Gordon Bascom with 11 points. Though lots of enthusiasm was shown by the fans who were supporting their teams, tempers were well controlled by both teams and spectators. The crowd was well pleased with the performance of the sophomores playing on the B squads. Uintah won by 56-20 score and showed great promise for the future of Uintah's basketball teams as the little Utes continually drove through the Union defense for lay up Rhots. The Pep Clubs, both from the visitors and the home teams, made their presence known with fine support for meir respective teams, the games were followed by a student body dance in the gym. UTES PLUCK EAGLES 82-39 FRIDAY TO ASSURE BERTH IN STATE TOURNEY The Uintah Utes Friday demolished the visiting Duchesne Eagles with an 82-39 victory. This was the Utes' seventh straight win in the Region Five league games and assured them of a berth in the State B tournament at Provo March 14-17. The final league game will be played Friday against Union at Union High School. Playing against Duchesne the Utes scored in the first two seconds of the game. May hew of the visiting team scored right afterwards and proved his ability to snatch the ball away even with three Utes charging at him. From then on the Utes steadily pulled away until at the end of the first quarter they led by 16-5. They smothered the Eagles' basket so that thev couldn't get a close shot. The score al the end ot the second quarter was 34-14, at the end of the third, 59 25 and finally, B2-39. High scorers were: Eaton, 29; Cutshaw, Cut-shaw, 14 and Slaugh, 12. Muse and Mayhcw each made 13 for the visitors. At the half the girls' pep club honored the seniors who will be graduating this year by forming a '56 and UI IS. The Uintah Utes won the first Uinlah-llnion Uinlah-llnion battle with ease, but the Cougars turned the tables on the Utes in the second game. COUGARS EDGE UTES 4H-41 TO WIN SECOND HA ITI, I', The Utes' bid for eight coiiM-culive victories in the high school circuit received a jar recently with a rejuvenated Union Cougar team edging them out with a 48 44 win at the Union gym. Union took a 6 2 lead in the first quarter but the period ended 14-12 for Uintah. The Cougars led by 32-25 at the end of the second and by 42-38 at the end of the third. For a short time the Utre tied the game up at 42-42. Then Union led by 2 points. The game was tied again at 44 all, but the Cougars scored another field goal and made two free throws to wind up with a 48 4 1 victory. A month earlier at Vernal the Cougars had been demolished by a 60-36 loss. The Ute "B" team won again with a 60-34 victory. MORGAN TIPS UTES 5H-13 WEDNESDAY IN STATE If GAME Uintah joined Monticello and Cedar ('it v in a fall by the wayside in the first round ol the prep cIu.smc Wednesday at the BYU fieldhousc in Provo. Morgan, paced by Gary Randall and Mike Bridges, beat the local boys by a solid 51143. Salt Lake sporLswriters commented that "Randall outgunned the Utes' Valoy Eaton by 27-19 and teaming with Bridges, controlled Ixith boards."
