Show Bicentennial projects cited for meritorious service At a Bicentennial Award luncheon held Friday Feb 11 at the Lamplighter Inn an Appreciation Award Certificate of Meritorious Service was awarded to the Uintah Bicentennial Bicentennial Bicentennial tennial Board of Directors by Marguerite Colton member of the Utah Bicentennial Executive Board of Directors TilE THE AWARD signed by former Gov Calvin Rampton and Bicentennial Commission Chairman Dr 0 O. I Nelson Pres Jack Seitz Rev Elmer Haight Jr Philip Ellis June Stewart Alta Winward Dave Condon Fred Brown Denny Davies Mayor Sam Snyder and Jack Wallis of the Vernal Express Ex Ex- press This group of outstanding Americans have spent their time and money meeting almost every month for the last two years to plan approve and work out worth while Bicentennial Bicentennial Bicentennial tennial Projects The committee especially wants to thank the many hundreds of people who assisted in this service to us all through their church programs community com com- community programs schools festivals parades putting up flag poles buying flags home bome beautification painting ng of fire hydrants all of which has brought so much fun and a ap p. p f for l American way of life in the Uintah Basin THERE IS still a lot to do so pitch in and help finish the Bicentennial in style and thanks a million said Mrs Colton Mrs Colton a member of the Utah Bi Bicentennial Commission presented a large oil painting The First White Settlement in Utah to Director Mike Perry of the Utah Field House of Natural History The first white settlement in Utah old Fort Roubidoux also known as Fort Uintah Fort as the trappers called it was built near the present little town of Whiterocks by a trader named Antoine R Roubidoux in in 1837 ac- ac wl to most historians ns 4 ONE STORY has it that the trading post was first established here by a trapper named Jim Reed in about 1828 Reed according to the story then sold out to Roubidoux who enlarged th the fort and operated the trading post until 1844 Travelers who knew this post described the behavior of the trappers and traders here as as cruel beyond buying belief-buying and selling Indian women and children like animals mistreating them terribly to the point that the Utes finally revolted attacked and burned Continued on Page 16 Bicentennial awards Continued from Page 1 the fort s This oil painting enlargement by Karen Moss a local Utah artist was copied from a pen and ink sketch originally in the Auerbach Collection Mr and Mrs Moss came to the Uintah Basin to tomake tomake tomake make the Bicentennial film The Great Uintah Country and fell in love Jove with our beautiful b beautiful ut 1 Basin sin The painting was originally presented to Mrs Colton by Jack McDonald from the theU U University of Utah h-Bu h Bureau u of of f Community Development Department Mrs Colton in turn felt fell the picture should be enjoyed by all the citizenry and so she gave it to the museum The film is to be available to any school church or club group for careful showing Reservations for it may be made at the Vernal Chamber of Commerce TilE THE UINTAH Bicentennial Committee presented Mrs Colton with the Federated Women's Club Bicentennial plate Portrait of Liberty encased in a glass plaque and inscribed Proclaim Liberty Throughout the Land Here I thought I would be the one making presentations said a surprised and pleased Mrs I Colton The Liberty plates were poured into four different molds commemorating the years 1973 1913 to 1976 and when the series were completed the Bicentennial molds were destroyed and so the plates have become collectors collector's items Said Alta Winward As a committee we felt that we had enjoyed one of the better Bicentennial years of any of the counties throughout the state state a a patriotic event was planned for every month and we give the lions lion's share for the success of those events to Marguerite Colton She traveled hundreds of Gf miles covering her district comprising Uintah Duchesne and Daggett counties Her lIer enthusiasm was contagious her creative ideas endless Truly if anyone could be called the Red White and Blue Lady it is Mrs Colton |
