S Steels Steel's Geneva plant attending at at- tending a Governors Governor's reception and hearing an energy industry forum At the Geneva plant we saw hand first-hand some of oC the dif diC difficulties difficulties encountered in making steel We came away with more sympathy for the air pollution problems they have Making steel is a dirty job no matter how you look at it At the governors governor's reception Governor Matheson told us he was optimistic about the states state's claims to the in lieu oil shale lands now tied up in a legal contest with the federal government At the energy forum Corum we were proud of a Vernal representative representative representative Rees nees Madsen of WhiteRiver WhiteRiver White WhiteRiver River Shale Project who told Utah publishers of his company's com come pany's plans to develop oil shale into an energy source We came home with an award for third place in Best Front Page contest and with renewed enthusiasm to return to the hectic deadlines and headaches which accompany weekly news publishing Last week we received complaints concerning two page front-page stories which may have been misinterpreted The first was in reporting the untimely untimely untimely un un- un- un timely shooting of Jerry Chew Chewin in Rock Springs In the article we also mentioned his accident on Vernal Avenue a week previously when an elderly woman was killed Members of the Chew family thought this trus reference was uncalled for Our only reason for mentioning it was to comment on the unfortunate unfortunate unfortunate un un- un- un fortunate chain of events that had befallen lIen Mr Chew The Vernal A Avenue venue accident was not his rus fault nor was the bizarre shooting in Wyoming We are sorry that we offended the family in reporting the event as we did The other misunderstanding evidently developed over the way we reported the Chamber meeting Tuesday of last week in which the Uintah District school building needs were discussed by Superintendent Reid We stated the superintendent and Chairman of the School Board Kenneth Aycock favored the plan to switch the Uintah High School with Vernal Junior High School facilities and build a middle school for grades 6 and 7 School Board member John told us that Mr Aycock was inaccurately quoted In talking to Mr Aycock he stated he commented commented commented com com- on the change but did not intend to leave the Impression impression impression im im- Im- Im he favored one plan over another According to Mr Aycock future building plans have not been finalized by the School Board Community input is being sought in a series of public meetings As we said before its it's nice tobe to tobe tobe be back to the every day problems of running a newspaper We are saddened by the announcement of the resignation of wrestling coach Dennis Coach has attained an enviable record of championships at Uintah High School over the past twelve years and the news came as a shock to many We hope Coach will reconsider but if this is not possible we wish him rum success in his future endeavors and thank him for his hard work in making champions out of our wrestling teams during his years as coach Next Monday will be a holiday hollday for many and a regular work day for others Presidents President's Day is scheduled to tobe tobe tobe be a school holiday in Uintah School District but Uintah High JUgh School will have classes this day to make up the day missed when the water Ovate was turned off Cf ant and school dismissed To have one school remain open during a holiday when the others are out will take some salesmanship on the part of the administrators As usual most retail businesses will be open Monday as well as yours truly One way to make those businesses remaining open more cheerful is is to come to town and shop all the Washington Day Pay sales |
