Show History o of Flaming Gorge country i a i A recently published history of Daggett County may be of particular interest to residents of Vernal and Ashley Valley since many of the people it deals with were also important in local history It was written by hy Dick and Vivian Dunham who wrote a brief history for the Utah Centennial in 1947 called Our Strip of Land The present volume titled Flaming Gorge Country is revised andis and andis is a considerably enlarged version TilE THE nOOK HOOK opens with a brief account of the geology of the Uinta Mountains 1 and the canyons of the Green followed by hy a short account of the Ute and Shoshoni Indians who roamed and hunted the region The district Browns Brown's Hole foie in ini f particular was a favorite rendezvous for trappers and traders A number of mountain men like Jim and John Baker and Uncle Jack Robinson settled bellied down there to become the first permanent settlers of the intermountain West The book also gives account of the recent discovery of the site sile of Fort Davy Crockett Following chapters tell of same early bad men pros prospectors and early settlers the visits of famous scientists like John Wesley Powell of or the Great Diamond Hoax of early cattle drives from Texas and New Mexico wintering in Browns Brown's Hole of early ranchers ranchers ranchers ran ran- chers and their daily lives at work and at al play There is an extended account of ol famous outlaws like Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch who ho u used ed Browns Brown's Park as one of or their hideouts and a chapter on im some notable murders including including in in- duding the infamous killers Harry Tracy and Tom Horn later aler chapters tells of the Mormon settlement of Lucerne Valley and Manila of the now vanished town of Linwood the establishment of Daggett County the building of the Flaming Gorge Dam and what it has mC meant to residents DR nn DUNHAM and his wife spent more than two years in Daggett County back in 47 1946 and talked with many old timers who have since passed on They moved to Laramie wh whore where re Dr Dunham became head of the speech department of the University of Wyoming On his retirement in 1970 he moved to Denver making it his headquarters for further research gathering stories from old journals newspaper accounts and unpublished memoirs Of or particular local interest was a previously unpublished account by William A.
