| Show Morgan cel celebrate brate 60 years years of togetherness Maeser Special The Special The children of Mr and Mrs Morgan Merkley honored them at an open house home on their Wedding Anniversary April 8 at the home of a son June and LaNae Merkley in Ashley Ward LaNae had fashioned a beautiful cake decorated with flowers and little figurines representing each of the Merkley children the boys in dark clothing and the girls in colored dresses two identical for their twins HOME IIO FOR the occasion were Phebe Jane Hall from Grand Junction Junction Junc Junc- Junction tion Colo Roland and Velda Hansen of Orem Frank and Veda Parkins Nephi Sybil Bohn from Salt Lake City George D. D D and Diane Merkley of Maeser Glendon Merkley another son who lives in California called and sent flowers Clowers as he was unable to come The have 18 16 grandchildren and 44 great Close relatives present were the George Bills Provo Vicky Bohn and children West Gale all of Midvale Utah Mrs Reuben Borges and Becky Broda of Salt Lake City Nina Merkley Mr and Mrs Jerry Merkley Mr and Mrs Wilson Merkley of Duchesne Dave Sandy the Merrell Snows Jensen Darwin Francon of Provo In reminiscing Mrs Merkley said that in earlier days they had owned a ahome ahome ahome home in Maeser and one in Ashley Canyon just above the Merkley Park that the public used for so many years After ACter their first son was born they moved to the canyon where they lived the year around until their children started to school Then they stayed until all the crops were in with the children riding a horse to school in Maeser She also recalled when June tried to ride his horse across Ashley Creek at atthe atthe atthe the ripe old age of two wo The creek was flooding tI she said And he and his horse were carried downstream on the theother theother theother other side and his father had to save hi him m. m One time the children coaxed their mother to go up the canyon on a picnic The creek was high but they all got in a buggy and away they went They had a time getting over the creek but finally made it Mrs Merkley l was expecting her fifth child and it decided U this s was the time to put in an appearance So there they were with no phone and a high creek to cross IF TilE THE TRIP over had been exciting the one coming back was more so The rushing water had undermined the channel and it was deeper than ever Hold onto my overall straps Morgan told his small son G Glendon lendon And if I go goIn goin goin in the water dont don't you let go gol Ill I'll bring you out of it When they reached home Morgan told his nephew George Bills who was visiting at their home to get on his horse orse and go for his mother Aunt Jane Colton and to call the doctor George hurried up over the hills toward the old power plant But the baby decided it couldn't wait for all those people Morgan had born many a baby in the animal kingdom so he was not too upset It was a surprise however when pot not one but two little girls arrived His sister Aunt Jane was soon there and then the doctor came They were a welcome sight chuckled Morgan The other children could hear the babies cry and the Merkley's eldest daughter Clella stayed glued to the oven door where she could watch the squirming new bundles All the other children were born in Maeser Clella died in October of 1930 with a ruptured appendix THE TIIE I YS raised beautiful gardens in the canyon and always had to outwit the deer in order to harvest them Finally they planted wonder berries and the deer liked them so sowell sowell sowell well they left the other things alone Skunks gave them trouble with their turkey points and baby ducks but they worked out that problem too Magpies were also a problem If they even heard a hen cackle they'd be right there for the egg laughed Mrs Merkley The remember the wonderful wonderful won won- wonderful years in summer and winter They could hear the creek at night the wild animals and the birds But most of all aU they treasure the close family life they shared and the fun their children had playing and working in the green greenmeadows greenmeadows greenmeadows meadows and climbing the beautiful red canyon anyon walls In 1948 they built the new brick home in Maeser that they have enjoyed for lor 30 years |
