Man Alan G Candy The Flaming Gorge program for the 1978 season Isnow Isnow is isnow now being planned with hopes of increasing local interest in inDie inthe the Die camp During the 1977 1971 camp season only four percent of the enrollees were from the Vernal Vernal- Dutch Manila John-Manila area A local recruiting program is being planned for this spring in all of the area junior high and high schools to generate interest Interest interest in In- terest among local youth The seven seven week week residential camp in Dutch John offers youth six weeks of summer employment with the US U.S. Forest Service Some of the jobs that participants s willbe will willbe willbe be working on include trail construction and maintenance in the Uinta Mountains campground campground cam cam- maintenance and construction improvements of visitor facilities at the Red I. I Canyon and Flaming Gorge Dam visitor centers restoration of the Swett Ranch state historical site range and wildlife improvements landscaping landscaping landscaping land land- houses in Dutch John and burn areas These work projects are located from Little Hole to Spirit Lake andas far north as Fire Hole Enrollees are paid the minimum federal wage of per hour for for- thirty hours of work per week They also spend ten hours per week in environmental environmental environmental en en- awareness training for which they receive one-half one credit in science applicable toward their high school graduation The program is open to youths from 15 to 18 years old who reside in the state of Utah Application for the program can be made through local area schools for either of the two week six-week sessions The first camp starts on June 4 and runs through July 15 The second camp starts July 16 and andru ru runs s through August 26 There will be 48 enrollees per camp selected on a random basis by computer Both camps are coeducational coeducational co co- coeducational educational with a 50 distribution of male and female enrollees Out of the 48 enrollees eight who excel in work and leadership abilities will be e chosen as youth leaders They will receive an extra tier Per per day to work as assistants to crew leaders on work projects The youths live in houses in inthe inthe the community of Dutch John or orin orin orin in spike camps in the Uinta Mountains They receive their meals in the cafeteria of the Dutch John Elementary School A full recreation program is planned for their off-duty off hours that includes des backpacking rafting swimming tours of the area and various social ac ac- tivi lies The camp is governed democratically through a camp council The youths elect representatives to the council and the council in turn sets up rules and regulations for the camp and administers disciplinary actions The camp director for this year is Cleve B.
