Show p. p I II Is Ii I i s I i US U.S. Representative Gunn McKay In his rus talk to the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce Monday of last week said The government is never better bettor than its people and the things they demand As long as you accept government funds you must also accept government controls There is no free lun lun- ch McKay quoted an old saying Him who has gold rules and stated that government strings were necessary to insure the wise management of government funds McKay said that the representative process is slow deliberate and irritating It is expensive and tedious The public has to exert enough pressure to get action on issues McKay concluded by saying We live in a great land Who do dowe dowe dowe we help the farmer the cattle raiser the coal miner the steel mill worker or the small businessman Government sponsored programs often cause great concern such as the impatience certain Basin groups are expressing expressing expressing ex ex- pressing over the local benefits of the Central Utah Project The Ute Tribe announced about three weeks ago that they were with the present plans of the Central Utah Project and that they wanted their water rights developed immediately and not postponed as they had formerly agreed Last week the Duchesne County Commission announced it is not going to pay the two mill levy it has been assessed to go into the Central Utah Project Conservancy District because Duchesne County is not getting enough local representation and benefits from the project Maybe as Gunn McKay stated We need to exert pressure to get the things we want out of the government But isn't there a better way How about supporting the long range project planning The Vernal area was the first to realize some of the benefits of or the Project with the completion of the Dam and Reservoir The Jensen Unit is is' currently underway underway underway un un- un- un derway with the starting of the Red Fleet Dam and Reservoir No one questions the benefits these projects have had and will continue to have on the Vernal area especially during a drought year like we have just experienced The Ute Tribe has the Bottle Hollow dam and reservoir as part of their water development from he the CUP Duchesne County has the Starvation dam damand damand damand and reservoir Both of these projects have cost much more to build than either entity would be willing to invest individually and they both have benefited their respective areas For the past few years most of the work of the CUP has been concentrated on the Bonneville Unit which will mainly benefit the Wasatch Front and the southern reaches of the CUP This unit will divert some of the Ute Tribe and Duchesne County water to other parts of the state This has been in the plan of CUP since its inception and most everyone agreed to the plan If support is withdrawn from the CUP plan by the Ute Tribe and Duchesne County it is not unreasonable to envision the Upalco the Uintah and the Ute Indian units of the CUP going down the drain These are expensive units and the only way they will be built is by playing ball with the CUP and the federal government These are the rules referred to by Rep McKay when we accept government assistance Him who has gold rules The CUP has been a long time coming and still has a long ways to go Federal funding has stretched out the project so far farnow farnow farnow now that it has doubled and even trebled in cost cast Lets Let's dont don't stretch the completion date of the final CUP unit any further by infighting over which unit is finished when Lets Let's form a united front and get the CUP finished The next two Mondays will wUl be beIn bein bein in lieu holidays for many businesses Since Sunday is already the day of rest the next day will be used for Christmas and New Years Year's Day holidays The Express office will be closed on these Mondays Mondays Mondays Mon Mon- days so please help us by bringing in your news either Friday or early Tuesday We wish you a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS |
