Show tI t- t I r 4 t r t t 1 ti r BEAUTIFUL DOLLS in native dress from many countries countries countries coun coun- tries are on display this month at the Uintah County Library The dolls represent 15 years of collecting by Isobel Batty Seeing them will be a Christmas experience experience experience ex ex- ex- ex for your children Dolls from every land December library display By Hy Doris Burton Uintah County Library is featuring Isobel Batty's Baltys doll collection during the month of December On display are French and German dolls in one display case and Oriental in another Isobel is the wife of Paul Batty They have two children Michael and Mrs Annette Godfrey They proudly claim ten grandchildren Isobel began collecting dolls about fifteen years ago I wanted my daughter Annette to have a collection but she would rather bury them or give them away She loved to have elaborate funerals for lor them and bury them Isobel stated This was a natural thing for Annette to do as she is the granddaughter granddaughter granddaughter grand grand- daughter of Bessie Swain former Vernal mortician However about one hundred dolls managed to survive and become part of oC Isobel's collection ISO ISOBEL'S BELS BEL'S HUSBAND Paul said she should be the doll collector a and d bought se several er I Madame Alexander dolls to start her off She has boxes of dolls in the garage in the closets and in every available storage spot However this spring they ar are building a special addition onto their home to display her large collection The oldest doll she owns has an 1810 pewter head There are sixty dolls on display in the Library including in in- eluding The Three Musketeers' Musketeers from East Berlin As handiwork and art are not allowed to be betaken betaken betaken taken out of East Berlin these three dolls were smuggled out outon outon outon on top lop of or a picnic basket especially for Isobel Also displayed are ancient Chinese wedding couples Thailand dancers and a Korean Bride One of or the dolls was in the first shipment of toys from mainland China since the Bamboo Curtain was lifted Some are modern day dolls Because of the expense In the many doll heads were sold separately and then placed on homemade rag bodies One such doll from Germany which is one hundred years old is in the display A RETIRED school teacher Isobel has taught in nearly every grade and every school in Uintah School district and two summers at BYU She has always been an a an outstanding community leader The Library invites everyone to include a visit to the library to see this outstanding display as part of their Christmas activities It will be especially interesting for the children to see what kind of dolls children in other countries play with |
