Show Absenteeism contributes to school drop outs One of the primary responsibilities responsibilities responsibilities of the attendance office at the high school is the communicating of problems related to students attendance at school The realization of this has led to a series of ol letters being written to parents informing informing in in- forming them that apparent problems exist with their students revealed Winslow Weber vice principal at Uintah High School this week DURING TilE THE first term of or the 78 1977 school year said Mr Weber the combined student- student body of ol the high school were enrolled in a total of classes The student body earned 1224 As A's 1323 Bs B's 1089 Cs C's Ds D's Passing 20 In- In completes and F's It is evident that the large majority of oC our students are having successful experiences at the high school However we weare weare weare are concerned with those students who are not finding success at school We are trying Not only that measles is associated with brain damage pneumonia deafness and mental retardation Whooping cough can kill too If youre you're a parent you are the person most responsible for assuring that your child has been immunized zed So call your doctor and ask that the youngsters youngster's immunization record be checked If immunization im is needed you should see that its it's done Various organizations will soon be sponsoring a wide state-wide drive to make certain that 90 percent of 01 Utah's children are completely protected against these diseases If II you greet this program with apathy your child could suffer suller to determine what it is that contributes to their failure We Weare Weare Weare are sure there are many factora factora factora fac- fac tora but one that seems very evident is poor attendance A close check of our grade reports revealed that 47 students or 56 percent of the received failing grades or 54 percent of the total failing grades These same 47 students also received 34 or 52 percent of ol the Ds D's given Each of these 47 students failed 3 or more classes Excluding these 47 students the attendance at the high school was 94 percent These 47 students were absent from school 42 percent of ol the time These facts and figures are not the only reasons for lor failure lailure but they are certainly a contributing contributing contributing con con- factor We would ur urge e the parents of our students to encourage their sons and daughters to be in attendance in their classes on time and ready to do the work assigned SCHOOL SHOULD be a pleasant and happy experience however the threat of ol failure lailure often times causes the student to look upon school as a place to avoid As the student experiences experiences experiences ex ex- difficulty he begins to cut class and the cutting of class automatically increases the difficulty until the only recourse is t to totally leave the class or school We urge the parents says Mr Winslow to become involved in in- Discuss school constructively constructively constructively con con- with your student and find lind out his feelings If they are negative find out why If it relates to problems created bythe by bythe bythe the school then communicate these problems to us We are also searching for lor ways to combat indifference and attitude problems A cooperative effort between the school the home and the community would help in solving many of our dif dif- |
