Show Sports thoughts Tl l o lu t Wrestling is a big sport In the Uintah Basin nasin as from throughout the Basin nasin area seem to be Interested in the grappling activity A number of wrestlers in various towns in the Uintah Basin nasin were asked the following What is your most memorable match or moment in wrestling LYNN S Vernal was a member of the Uintah High School wrestling team in 1958 1959 and 1960 When asked what his most memorable match was said I enjoyed It all Probably my most disappointing disappointing disappointing pointing match was when I L got beat by one point in overtime 13 to 12 at the state tournament I Iwas Iwas Iwas was wrestling one of those Callister kids from Delta I got fourth at state my junior year and fourth my senior year 59 GO 60 Callister didn't take state either in 1960 Uintah High School has captured 11 state wrestling titles and the first year the Utes garnered state was was in 1958 Uintah also placed first at state in 1959 Lynn said about those state championship years I thought they were great One thing that stands out in my mind was that our coach Leo Conk kept peeking at the blackboard because he was scared we wouldn't take state It was pretty close but we won state in 1958 He was half scared to look at the blackboard My second year 1959 we h hid had d a pretty strong team and we won state pretty easily Uintah scored 79 points to pocket first place honors at the 1958 Class B state tourney Cedar City placed second with 73 points Millard garnered third place with 60 GO points Uintah edged Cedar City for first place by six points added I couldn't beat my brother Leon because he was too tough and he had too much experience He had George Manning Cedar City beat 4 0 and tried to pin him for more points for the team and Manning rolled him over and pinned him Lynn and Leon were both i Tim TILE FOLLOWING was printed in the Vernal Express about the Leon George Manning battle for first place on March 6 1958 This was probably the feature match of the tournament was pinned by Manning in the last 15 seconds of the third round was holding a 4 0 lead but tried for a pin instead of riding out the round and was caught in a reversal to be pinned In 1958 Uintah nad Billy Murray Lyle Southam and Ronnie Lewis capture first place at the state stale tourney Leon nabbed second place Other Uintah team members were Jim Baxendale unlimited Teddy Corless Dwight Roberts Tim Dale Hullinger Doug Hatch Butch Boren and Arvin Billings 95 Ronald Dudley of Randlett bagged second place honors for Union High School at the state tournament in 1960 Dudley stated My most memorable match probably would be when I 1 wrestled at region in Mon- Mon It was probably a wrestling match I 1 had against Alan Trujillo of Uintah I won this match to take first place at region in the pound class They were close matches but I dont don't think he ever defeated me mein mein mein in 1960 The state tournament was a great experience I lost a close 2 1 decision for first place to a wrestler from Pleasant Grove at the state tour tour- Union Uintah and American Fork tied for fourth at state in 1960 commented I coached wrestling at Dixie High School for two years while I attended Dixie College in 1961 and 1962 I wrestled and played football for Utah State University for one year In 1963 I didn't compete in sports in 1964 1004 Terry Scholes of Roosevelt garnered first place in the pound class for Union High School at the state tournament in 1966 Scholes said Probably the last match I had that I won to take state was my most memorable match The wrestler was wa's was tram rom Delta I l be beat t thim him by one point It was was tied up and there was one minute let lef leCUn tin the final round I had a bloody nose and they stopped slopped the match and my coach said if I Iwas Iwas Iwas was going to do it I better do it now There were only 60 seconds left I was down and they started us going again and andI I got an escape and won by one |
